TITLE:     Teacher/Middle School Band Director

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 


Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university 
Valid South Carolina teaching certificate
Documented successful teaching experience
Proficiency in the use of technology, communication, instructional strategies that connect the curriculum to the

learners, student management, advanced musicianship.

 

REPORTS TO: Principal

 

SUPERVISES: Students

 

JOB GOAL:  To provide musical instruction for middle school students and to present them in performance as part of that       Instruction.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

1. Plans and provides daily instruction based on the South Carolina Standards for Instrumental Music that meets the individual needs, interests, abilities, and developmental levels of assigned students.

 

2. Plans daily instruction that uses instructional strategies to accommodate individual differences in maturity and rates, styles, and modalities of learning.

 

3. Provides content for learners that is appropriate for the unit objectives, for students' ability and developmental levels, and maintains an appropriate pace for all students.

 

4. Provides content for learners using multiple sources and formats, explanations, examples, and demonstrations and provides emphasis on key elements.

 

5. Monitors and enhances learning using multiple strategies such as observation of student performance, appropriate questioning techniques, informal assessment, appropriate adjustment of instructional strategies, effective instructional feedback, and appropriate and sufficient reviews and summaries of content and skills.

 

6.  Maintains and reinforces appropriate expectations for student performance and responsibility and student expectations for completing assignments.

 

7.  Communicates with parents/legal guardians regarding the academic performance of the students.

 

8.  Displays confidence and enthusiasm and promotes student to student interactions and student to teacher interactions.

 

9.  Establishes and communicates to students and parents clear and appropriate rules and consequences for student behavior and enforces rules in a fair and consistent manner.

 

10. Establishes effective routines for non-instructional tasks, plans for smooth transitions between instructional events, and manages instructional materials, resources, and technologies.

 

11. Maintains a physical environment that promotes learning and is safe and attractive.

 

12. Maintains confidentiality of student records.

 

13. Works cooperatively with the district.

 

14. Attends staff meetings and serves on committees as required.

 

15. Performs requirements as established by state and federal laws and requirements established by the Board of Trustees.

 

16. Fulfills professional responsibilities beyond the classroom (ie. faculty meetings, parent conferences).

 

17. Participates in professional development programs.

 

18. Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance. 

 

19. Recruits new students into the instrumental music program.

 

20. Meets with parents of beginning students to facilitate the rental or purchase of an instrument.

 

21. Plans for balanced instrumentation when assigning instruments to beginners.

 

22. Purchases music for programs and individual study.

 

23. Presents concerts or programs as directed by the instructional needs of the students and the valid expectations of the community

 

24. Participates in the following:

 

          South Carolina Region/Allstate Band Festival 

          South Carolina Solo & Ensemble Festival 

          At least one adjudicated contest/festival 

          Other musical events, such as workshops and or honor bands sponsored by colleges, area schools, and festivals. 

          In at least two joint concerts with the respective high schools, these normally include a winter and spring program.

 

25. Assists the high school directors in the recruitment and retention of students advancing to the high school programs.

 

26. Maintains an accurate record of all band equipment and music, instrument check out forms, grade reports and rosters.

 

27. Accompanies and is responsible for the band’s performance at approved civic functions such as dedications and other ceremonies.

 

28. Performs other duties as directed by the appropriate administrator.

 

Duties at the High School

 

29. Participates in Region and All State Music Auditions and encourages, assists and accompanies qualifying students in this activity.

 

30. Participates in Solo and Ensemble and encourages, assists and accompanies qualifying students in this activity.

 

31. Participates in a Concert Festival

 

32. Assists in maintaining an accurate record of all band equipment and music, instrument check out forms, grade reports and rosters.

 

33. Accompanies and is responsible for the band’s performance at approved civic functions such as dedications and other ceremonies.

 

34. Attends and assists the high school directors in the instruction and supervision of activities and performances.

These duties will include but are not limited to:

 

a. Band camp, which is generally held three weeks before school starts. A typical band camp schedule will include “two a day,” morning and afternoon rehearsals. Evening rehearsals are possible.

 

b. After school rehearsals that are held during the course of marching season.  These are held two to three times a week and are approximately two to three hours in length.

 

c. Attendance at football game performances and parades, including playoff games in which the band participates.

 

d. Marching band festivals and contests which are held in the fall.  These are all day events which are held on Saturdays.  The bands participate in an average of four to six of these events per year.

  

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  190 days.  Salary to be determined by the salary schedule established by the Board of Trustees.

 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the principal.  Evaluation instrument attached.
