Cold Case Detective

POSITION: COLD CASE DETECTIVE
DEPARTMENT: Anderson County Sheriff’s Office
Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Criminal Investigations Division leadership team, the Homicide Cold Case Detective functions as a sworn detective. Employees in this classification investigate specific cold cases as assigned including reviewing all documents, interviewing subjects, gathering information, and developing resources. The incumbent will perform duties in accordance with South Carolina State Statutes and established department policies, procedures, and guidelines. This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Conduct criminal investigations concerning cold case homicides.
- Investigate new leads related to cold case investigations.
- Review case files and physical evidence related to cold case investigations.
- Request further examination of physical evidence collected in homicide cases.
- May conduct professional interviews with victims, witnesses, and suspects.
- Prepare criminal cases for court. Testify in criminal cases.
- Provide victim’s family members with updated information concerning the progress of cold case investigations.
- May prepare detailed daily reports, case reports, and warrant requests as required.
- Give verbal presentations concerning cases.
- Organize case files to accepted standard format.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, state statutes, and ordinances.
- Skill in organization, prioritization, and time management
- Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective internal/external working relationships.
- Ability to operate necessary equipment, including but not limited to vehicle, and computer.
- Ability to effectively communicate and discretely handle confidential material
- Ability to exercise judgment and make decisions in accordance with established laws, regulations, ordinances, departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to analyze dangerous situations rapidly and accurately and to adopt, with or without supervision, quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
Minimum Requirements:
- Current certified law enforcement officer
- High School Diploma
- Five (5) years’ experience investigating homicides.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within three months a valid South Carolina Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
- Must be able to pass background investigation, oral interviews(s), physical fitness assessment and drug screen
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous cold case investigations experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred
