Job Description

Position: School Nurse

Reports To: Nurse Coordinator/Building Principal

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• -Be present, on time and ready to work.

• -Possess good oral and written communication skills.

• -Have the ability to professionally interact with students, staff, families, and outside agencies.

- Have the ability to prioritize tasks and problem solve with the use of good nursing judgement
in a potentially fast paced setting.

• -Have the ability to handle and stay calm in emergency situations.

• -Have the ability to use basic math skills such as carbohydrate counting and insulin calculation

for diabetics, measuring of medications, use of addition, subtraction, division and
multiplication, some fractions.

• -Be able to work independently with little to no supervision.

• -Seeks education and supervision as necessary.

• -Assess and care for student health needs and be able to determine if they are returning to

class or going home.

• -Able to navigate and document care and med delivery in the current computer

documentation system.

• -Provide and document first aid and emergency care for students and staff.

• -Maintain appropriate paperwork for students’ medications.

• -Administer approved and ordered meds to students using the 5 Rights of medication delivery.

• -Implement medically related procedures and monitor student’s responses (ie: tube feedings,

insulin/carb calculations for diabetic students).

• -Maintain up to date student Health Records.

• -Maintain student health confidentiality.

• -Assure student immunizations are completed and correct documentation is in place.

• -Assure student health issues are identified in the computer system and communicated to

pertinent school staff.

• -Maintain and stock supplies needed for student health services.

- Implement mandated screening programs.

• -Assure students receive appropriate growth and development lessons in appropriate grades.

• -Be aware of how to appropriately and safely delegate student care.

• -Complete and submit reports as required.

• -Have the ability to navigate and use the CHIRP website.

• -Implements policy on exclusion and readmission of students in connection with infectious and

contagious diseases.

• -Makes recommendations to administrators and staff on health needs of individual students.

• -Participates in In Service training programs.

• -Assists school personnel in maintaining sanitary standards in schools.

• -Other duties as assigned by the building Principal and/or the Nurse Coordinator.

Qualifications:

• -Licensed nurse in the state of Indiana

• -CPR/AED certified (or willing to complete after hire)

• -Complies with the ethics of the nursing profession, upholds and implements school rules,

state laws, administrative regulations and school board policies.

Work Environment:

• -Duties are performed primarily indoors.

• -Tasks involve potential exposure to blood, body fluids and tissue.

• -May be asked to cover for other nurses when absent.
