Job Purpose
The Tax Engagement Lead is the primary owner of the client tax compliance cycle and serves as the key liaison between clients and the preparation team. This role is responsible for leading the client through the tax preparation process, conducting high-level quality reviews of returns prepared by the Shared Service Center (SSC), and serving as the Signing Preparer. The Tax Engagement Lead ensures an exceptional client experience while maintaining accuracy, compliance, and timely filing of tax returns.
Key Responsibilities
Client Relationship & Communication
- Serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout the tax engagement process.
- Lead client kickoff meetings and draft review meetings to explain return outcomes, tax positions, and filing expectations.
- Manage client correspondence and respond to questions regarding tax filings and related matters.
- Oversee the collection of client source documents and ensure complete and accurate information is communicated to the production team.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and high-touch service.
Quality Control & Technical Review
- Perform detailed technical reviews of federal and state tax returns
- Ensure workpapers are complete, accurate, and aligned with the client’s facts and circumstances.
- Identify inconsistencies, risks, or potential red flags and resolve issues prior to client delivery.
- Serve as the Signing Preparer and maintain professional accountability for return accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain knowledge of current tax regulations and filing requirements.
Delivery Management & Workflow Coordination
- Manage workflow coordination between onshore teams and the India-based Shared Service Center.
- Communicate expectations regarding complexity, timelines, and priorities to production teams.
- Monitor return progress to ensure all internal and statutory deadlines are met.
- Prepare final filing packages for clients including summaries of results, tax due or refund information, and e-file authorization instructions.
- Support process improvements that enhance efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction.
Collaboration & Operational Support
- Partner with internal tax, accounting, and operations teams to ensure smooth client delivery.
- Provide guidance and support to team members regarding technical or workflow-related questions.
- Assist leadership in identifying workflow bottlenecks, operational risks, and quality improvement opportunities.
- Contribute to maintaining high service standards and operational consistency across the tax department.

Required Qualifications
- 2 years of experience in US tax compliance and tax return review.
- Strong technical knowledge of federal and state tax regulations.
- Ability to perform detailed technical reviews and defend tax positions when necessary.
- Strong communication and client relationship management skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly.
- Experience managing multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or a related field.
- Active CPA or Enrolled Agent (EA) license strongly preferred. Must be in progress to be obtained within 12 months of hire
- Experience working with offshore or Shared Service Center (SSC) tax production teams.
- Experience in a public accounting, professional services, or client advisory environment.
- Familiarity with tax workflow management systems and tax preparation software.
- Experience reviewing complex individual and business tax returns.
- Prior experience leading client-facing tax engagements or mentoring junior staff.
