Full-Time | On-Site | Fremont, CA | Andean Systems

Location - Fremont, CA

Employment Type - Part time/Consulting

About the Role

Andean Systems is seeking an EHS Officer to build and manage safety programs across our chemical laboratories, machine shop, and robotic equipment areas. You’ll be the primary point of contact for all environmental, health, and safety matters—developing protocols, ensuring regulatory compliance, maintaining permits, and working closely with engineering and leadership to keep our people and operations safe.

Key Responsibilities

Chemical & Laboratory Safety

  • Develop and enforce protocols for handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous chemicals, gases, and lab materials; manage waste classification, labeling, storage, and vendor coordination.
  • Monitor and maintain fume hoods, ventilation systems, gas detection equipment, and other exposure controls; conduct air quality and exposure assessments.
  • Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical inventories; ensure all personnel have access and training.

Mechanical Equipment, Robotics & Machine Shop Safety

  • Design and implement safety protocols for custom robotic equipment, CNC machines, lathes, mills, grinders, and other conventional machine shop equipment.
  • Develop procedures for automated and robotic systems, including guarding, safety interlocks, e-stop systems, and human-robot collaboration zones.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop LOTO procedures, machine guarding standards, and safe operating procedures; investigate incidents and near-misses.

Air Quality & Fire Safety

  • Manage the facility’s air quality compliance program: emissions monitoring, BAAQMD permits, Clean Air Act, and CARB requirements; oversee indoor air quality including ventilation assessments and fume hood testing.
  • Manage fire prevention and life safety per NFPA codes (30, 45, 70E, 79) and California Fire Code (Title 24); coordinate with Fremont Fire Department for inspections and permits.
  • Oversee fire suppression and alarm systems, egress plans, fire drills, flammable materials storage, and hot work permits for machine shop operations.

Regulatory Compliance & Permitting

  • Maintain all required environmental and safety permits (air quality, hazardous waste, fire); ensure compliance with zoning requirements for chemical use, storage, and facility operations.
  • Prepare and submit regulatory filings including Tier II reports, emissions inventories, and hazardous waste manifests.
  • Serve as primary liaison with Cal/OSHA, DTSC, local CUPA, and air quality management districts during inspections and audits; track regulatory changes and update policies accordingly.

Training & Emergency Preparedness

  • Design and deliver EHS training on hazard communication, PPE, emergency response, chemical handling, and equipment safety.
  • Lead emergency preparedness including evacuation drills, spill response, and first aid programs; conduct regular safety audits and job hazard analyses.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • 1 years of experience in an EHS role with direct experience in chemical laboratory or manufacturing environments.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes: OSHA (29 CFR 1910), EPA (RCRA, CERCLA, CAA, CWA), DOT (49 CFR), NFPA (30, 45, 70E, 79), ANSI/RIA R15.06, Cal/OSHA Title 8, California Fire Code Title 24, CARB, and BAAQMD.
  • Experience with hazardous waste management, environmental permits, zoning compliance, and developing safety programs and SOPs.
  • Familiarity with mechanical equipment and/or robotic system safety, including LOTO, machine guarding, and risk assessment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to train and influence employees at all levels.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with California’s regulatory framework (Cal/OSHA, DTSC, CEQA, BAAQMD). Candidates without CA-specific experience who are eager to learn are welcome to apply.
  • Professional certification: CSP, CIH, or CHMM.
  • Experience with ISO 14001/45001, Process Safety Management (PSM), or Risk Management Programs (RMP).
  • Familiarity with robotic safety standards (ANSI/RIA R15.06, ISO 10218) and collaborative robot risk assessments.
  • Lab management experience, including analytical equipment maintenance, calibration, and instrument qualification (e.g., ICP, GC, HPLC).
  • Experience in a startup or high-growth environment building programs from scratch.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Opportunity to build and shape the EHS program at a growing company.
  • Collaborative, mission-driven work environment.
  • Professional development support, including certification reimbursement.
