Position Summary
The Emergency Shelter Support Staff plays a critical frontline role in providing a safe, structured, and supportive environment for individuals experiencing homelessness. This position is responsible for day-to-day shelter operations during assigned shifts, ensuring safety, enforcing policies, and building respectful, trust-based relationships with guests.
Key Responsibilities
1. Guest Support & Engagement
- Welcome and intake guests in a professional and respectful manner
- Build rapport with guests while maintaining appropriate boundaries
- Provide basic support, guidance, and de-escalation when conflicts arise
- Monitor guest behavior and ensure adherence to shelter rules
- Encourage participation in case management and support services
2. Safety & Supervision
- Maintain a safe environment for guests, staff, and volunteers
- Conduct regular facility checks (interior and exterior)
- Respond to emergencies, including medical, behavioral, or safety incidents
- Follow all incident reporting procedures accurately and promptly
- Enforce policies consistently and fairly
3. Operations & Facility Care
- Perform intake and discharge procedures
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of common areas, sleeping spaces, and restrooms
- Assist with laundry, bed setup, supply restocking, and cleaning
- Monitor security systems
- Ensure lights-out, quiet hours, and daily schedules are followed
4. Documentation & Communication
- Complete shift logs and incident reports thoroughly and accurately
- Communicate important updates to incoming staff during shift transitions
- Document guest interactions when required
- Receive, document, and sort in-kind donations
- Coordinate with case managers and leadership as needed
5. Team Collaboration
- Work cooperatively with staff and volunteers
- Support a positive, mission-driven team culture
- Participate in trainings and staff meetings as required
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience in human services, security, or related field preferred
- Ability to manage conflict and remain calm under pressure
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Basic computer and documentation skills
- Ability to work evenings, overnight shifts, weekends, and holidays
- Lived experience with homelessness, recovery, or similar challenges is valued. Demonstrated stability in recovery is preferred.
Physical & Mental Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, and monitor the facility for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25–50 pounds occasionally
- Ability to handle high-stress situations with sound judgment
