Position Title: Interim Academy Director & Success Coach, ANANSI Academy

Location: Washington, D.C.

Employment Type: Contract (1099), 10 months, August 2026 -May 2027

Reports To: Executive Director, President

About the School

ANANSI Academy is an independent micro-school high school located in Washington, D.C., dedicated to academic excellence, student growth, and community engagement. We serve a diverse student body and emphasize multi-pathway learning for students in grades 6-12, focused on applying content and skills within the local and global community, while integrating small class sizes with personalized learning, experiential learning through field experiences, internships, externships and entrepreneurship. 

Position Overview

The interim Academy Director (AD) is the educational leader of the institution, responsible for advancing the school’s mission, ensuring academic excellence, and overseeing all aspects of school. The AD works in close partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees to set strategic direction while leading faculty, staff, and students in a positive and inclusive school culture. This role supports the school’s mission to provide personalized, mastery-based education within a micro school model, with an anticipated enrollment of 2- 5 students in the 2026-2027 School Year. 


Key ResponsibilitiesLeadership & Strategy

  • Articulate and advance the school’s mission, vision, and strategic priorities
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Trustees on governance, long-term planning, and policy development
  • Serve as the chief external representative and relationship manager for the school, cultivating strategic partnerships across the D.C. region  
  • Model professionalism, flexibility, and a commitment to the mission of ANANSI Academy

Academic Leadership

  • Oversee curriculum development, instructional quality, and student outcomes
  • Recruit, develop, and retain high-quality faculty and academic leaders
  • Foster a culture of innovation, inclusion, and continuous improvement
  • Directly teach and support with in class instruction as needed within the micro school model as a success coach (this is required during the first year of this role)

Community & Culture

  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and equitable school environment
  • Engage actively with students, families, faculty, alumni, and community members
  • Address student and community concerns with transparency and care

Operations & Finance

  • Overseeing budgeting, financial planning, and resource allocation
  • Ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and regulations
  • Managing operations, safety, and infrastructure including: 
  • Coordinate daily school operations and ensure smooth functioning of school systems. 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for students, families, staff, and visitors
  • Manage school calendars, scheduling, communications, and administrative systems
  • Maintain student records, enrollment documentation, attendance records, and compliance files
  • Coordinate logistics for school events, field experiences, student exhibitions, and community activities

Advancement & Enrollment

  • Lead fundraising efforts, donor relations, and institutional advancement
  • Support admissions and enrollment strategy to attract and retain students
  • Build partnerships with local organizations and stakeholders

Other

  • Additional administrative tasks as assigned


QualificationsRequired

  • Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred)
  • 5 or more years as a Lead Teacher or school leadership experience (or a combination) in secondary (6th-12th grade) education
  • Demonstrated success in organizational and team management, and strategic planning
  • Strong financial acumen and experience managing budgets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred

  • Background in fundraising or advancement
  • Familiarity with the Washington, D.C. educational landscape

Compensation & Benefits

  • Weekly stipend with the possibility of incentive bonuses. 
  • For the 26-27 school year, the school year working time frame for this role position is August 1st 2026-May 31st, 2027 (10 months). Summer contracting might be available and is dependent on funding and resource availability.
  • This is a contract (1099) part time role with an approximate number of work hours each week when school is in session. 
  • Taxes are not deducted from pay, individual is responsible for their taxes
  • In-person role with some virtual work days.
