What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engine Testing Engineer position at Analytical Engineering Inc., (AEI)?
Job description:
About Us
Founded in 1994, Analytical Engineering, Inc. (AEI) is an established research, development, and manufacturing organization specializing in engine and component testing. AEI supports a wide range of diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel engine development programs through in-house testing capabilities and a collaborative engineering approach.
Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Engineer to support engine test cell operations and development activities. This position is approximately 80% hands-on work in the test cell and is not a desk-based role. The Engineer will work closely with test cell technicians to plan, execute, and troubleshoot engine tests while supporting multiple projects simultaneously. Success in this role requires strong multitasking skills, adaptability, and the ability to prioritize competing test schedules and technical demands.
This is also a customer-facing role. The Engineer will regularly interact with customers in person and via phone/email to coordinate testing activities, communicate test status, and support technical discussions.
In addition, the Engineer will develop and maintain LabVIEW-based test and data acquisition systems, provide real-time technical support during testing, and assist with basic component design and facility support activities as needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Support daily engine test cell operations in close collaboration with test cell technicians
- Plan, execute, monitor, and troubleshoot engine tests across multiple concurrent projects
- Effectively prioritize tasks and manage workload in a fast-paced, multi-project environment
- Develop, modify, and maintain LabVIEW applications for test automation, control, and data acquisition
- Configure, troubleshoot, and maintain instrumentation, sensors, and DAQ hardware used in engine testing
- Assist with test setup, engine installation, calibration, and checkout activities
- Diagnose and resolve test cell, instrumentation, and engine-related issues during active testing
- Analyze test data and provide timely feedback and recommendations
- Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and safety documentation
- Communicate directly with customers to discuss test objectives, schedules, results, and technical issues
- Support basic component and fixture design, including 3D modeling and drawing creation using tools such as AutoDesk Inventor, Fusion 360, or similar CAD software
- Provide support for test facilities, including assisting with equipment layout, utilities coordination, and general test cell infrastructure improvements
- Coordinate with engineering and technical staff to meet test objectives and schedules
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Chemical, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent technical degree
- Strong understanding of internal combustion engines
- Hands-on experience in an engine test cell environment
- Demonstrated experience using LabVIEW for data acquisition, control, or test automation
- Proven ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Willingness to spend the majority of time working hands-on in a test cell environment
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills, including customer-facing communication
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with internal combustion engines
- Advanced proficiency with LabVIEW, including custom VIs and automated test sequences
- Familiarity with NI hardware (e.g., PXI, cDAQ, cRIO)
- Experience with engine instrumentation, emissions measurement, and calibration
- Experience with basic mechanical design and CAD modeling for test components or fixtures
- Background in performance development, durability testing, or emissions testing
