What are the responsibilities and job description for the Overnight Breakdown Specialist position at AMX Trucking?
Breakdown Specialist – Overnight
AMX Logistics is looking for an experienced Breakdown Specialist to join our Fleet Maintenance team. This is a full-time, overnight position responsible for coordinating truck and trailer breakdowns and helping get our equipment and drivers safely back on the road as quickly as possible.
When a driver experiences a breakdown, you will be the first point of contact. You’ll assess the situation, troubleshoot the issue remotely, coordinate roadside assistance or towing, manage repairs, communicate with operations, and follow each breakdown through to resolution.
This is a fast-paced, high-accountability role that is ideal for someone with heavy-duty truck maintenance, fleet maintenance, diesel, or roadside service experience who can stay calm under pressure and make sound decisions quickly.
What You'll Do
- Respond to truck and trailer breakdown calls from drivers and operations
- Confirm driver safety, location, and roadside hazards
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues with drivers over the phone
- Use fault codes, telematics, ELD information, and driver descriptions to identify potential problems
- Determine whether a unit requires roadside repair, towing, a repair facility, or a tractor/trailer swap
- Coordinate roadside service, towing, tire service, and repair vendors
- Obtain repair estimates and approve repairs within established authority limits
- Escalate major repairs or expenses to the Maintenance Manager
- Verify warranty coverage before authorizing eligible repairs
- Monitor repairs from start to finish and follow up with vendors on ETAs
- Review repair invoices against approved work and scope
- Keep dispatch, fleet management, and other internal teams updated throughout the breakdown
- Help coordinate driver needs such as hotels, meals, and other approved assistance
- Ensure safety defects and DOT out-of-service issues are properly addressed before equipment returns to service
- Document breakdowns, repairs, vendors, costs, downtime, and resolutions in company systems
- Identify recurring equipment or component failures and communicate trends to the maintenance team
- Help evaluate vendor performance based on response time, quality, and cost
What We're Looking For
Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 2 years of experience in heavy-duty truck maintenance, fleet maintenance, breakdown coordination, roadside dispatch, or a related field
- Working knowledge of Class 8 tractors and trailers
- Knowledge of diesel engines, aftertreatment systems (DPF/DEF/SCR), air brakes, electrical systems, tires, and reefer equipment
- Familiarity with DOT/FMCSA requirements, vehicle inspections, out-of-service criteria, and hours-of-service regulations
- Comfortable working with fleet maintenance software, TMS platforms, telematics, and diagnostic/fault-code systems
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple active breakdowns while maintaining accurate documentation
Preferred:
- ASE Medium/Heavy Truck certification
- Diesel technician experience
- CDL-A or previous commercial driving experience
- Experience with national roadside assistance and towing networks
- Experience processing OEM or component warranty claims
The Ideal Candidate
We're looking for someone who can stay calm when things go wrong and move quickly toward a solution.
You should be comfortable talking with drivers who may be stranded, diagnosing problems with limited information, negotiating with repair vendors, managing multiple breakdowns at once, and keeping operations informed.
The right person is:
- Calm under pressure
- Technically minded
- Highly organized
- A strong communicator
- Comfortable making decisions
- Cost-conscious and willing to negotiate
- Focused on driver safety
- Persistent about getting repairs completed
- Able to work independently during overnight hours
Overnight Schedule
This is a full-time overnight position based in an office environment.
The role requires working overnight hours and may include weekends and holidays, as breakdowns can occur at any time. The position will also participate in the company's after-hours/on-call rotation as needed.
This is an operations-focused position with heavy phone and computer use and requires the ability to manage multiple live situations simultaneously.
Performance Expectations
Success in this role is measured by your ability to:
- Respond quickly to breakdown calls
- Get the appropriate vendor engaged as quickly as possible
- Minimize equipment downtime
- Control repair and towing costs
- Keep drivers and internal teams informed
- Ensure repairs are completed correctly
- Capture accurate breakdown and repair information
- Identify recurring equipment issues
- Maximize eligible warranty recovery
