What are the responsibilities and job description for the Merchant Support — Field Tech position at AMS — Automated Merchant Services?
About the role
Enjoy hands-on work, solving problems, and meeting people? AMS is hiring a Field Service Technician to help local businesses get their technology running—and keep it that way.
No previous technical or payment-processing experience is required. We provide training from the ground up. Whether you’re starting your career, changing industries, or looking to build a practical skill set, we’re open to teaching the right person.
You’ll visit businesses across the Rio Grande Valley to install payment and point-of-sale systems, troubleshoot issues, and show owners and employees how to use their equipment. This isn’t a desk job. You’ll work in different environments, build technical skills, and see the impact of your work firsthand.
We’re looking for someone who is dependable, good with people, and ready to learn. We’ll teach you the technology and our processes. You bring the effort, curiosity, and follow-through.
Benefits and perks
- Flexible scheduling. Scheduling flexibility coordinated around client appointments, assigned responsibilities, and service coverage.
- Two weeks of paid time off per year. Time to rest, recharge, and take care of your personal priorities.
- Company vehicle. A company vehicle is provided for client visits and other work-related travel.
- Additional earnings through referrals. Earn additional income through AMS’s referral program for qualifying referrals.
- Wellness reimbursements. Reimbursement of up to $60 biweekly for eligible haircuts, spa services, and wellness products under the company’s wellness program.
- Paid weekend standby opportunities. Receive a daily standby stipend for assigned weekend coverage. During these periods, you must remain reachable and answer service calls. The stipend compensates you for availability; time spent actively handling calls, troubleshooting, or performing service work is recorded and paid separately.
Training and support
You are not expected to know our equipment or systems when you start. We’ll teach you how to:
- Set up and test payment terminals, point-of-sale systems, printers, and related equipment.
- Identify common technical problems and work through troubleshooting steps.
- Explain equipment and everyday tasks clearly to business owners and employees.
- Document service visits, manage assigned equipment, and follow AMS procedures.
- Recognize when to ask for help and work with AMS or vendor support teams.
As your skills and confidence develop, you’ll take on more responsibility in the field. Asking questions is part of learning—we would rather you ask for help than guess.
What you will do
- Install and configure equipment. Set up payment terminals, point-of-sale systems, receipt printers, cash drawers, and related devices. Test the setup before turning it over to the client.
- Troubleshoot technical problems. Use your training to diagnose equipment, software, and basic connectivity issues. Work with AMS and vendor support teams when additional help is needed.
- Train business owners and employees. Walk clients through everyday tasks and help them feel comfortable using their equipment.
- Handle on-site service visits. Arrive prepared, communicate arrival times and delays, keep work areas organized, and treat client property with care.
- Document and follow through. Record the issue, work performed, testing results, and remaining next steps in the company’s ticketing system. Keep client communication in company-approved channels.
- Care for equipment and inventory. Prepare devices for installations, track assigned equipment and tools, and coordinate replacements or returns.
What we are looking for
- A willingness to learn, follow instructions, ask questions, and apply feedback.
- Dependability, punctuality, and a commitment to finishing what you start.
- A friendly, respectful approach to working with business owners and their employees.
- Basic comfort using a smartphone and computer. Professional IT experience is not required.
- Organization and attention to detail, including keeping appointments and documenting your work.
- A valid driver’s license, the ability to meet company driving requirements, and the ability to travel between client locations.
- Ability to perform hands-on equipment installation and service duties, with or without reasonable accommodation.
A college degree, technical certification, or previous field-service job is not required.
Experience in customer service, restaurants, retail, IT support, equipment installation, or other hands-on work is welcome, but not necessary. Spanish-language proficiency is a plus for client communication.
What success looks like
You show up ready to learn and prepared for your assignments. You treat clients respectfully, follow the steps you’ve been taught, and communicate when you need help.
As you gain experience, you become more comfortable troubleshooting problems, explaining solutions, and managing service visits. Before closing a visit, you confirm that the equipment works and the client understands how to use it—or clearly document what still needs attention and what happens next.
You don’t need to know every answer. You do need to be honest, take responsibility, and follow through.
