Position Summary

The Shipfitter lays out, fabricates, installs, and repairs structural components of U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines, including hull plating, decks, bulkheads, foundations, and structural assemblies.

Work is performed in accordance with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-12 (Structural Work), MIL-STD-1689A, NSTM Chapters 074 and 505, and OSHA 29 CFR 1915 shipyard-employment standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lay out and fabricate steel and alloy plate, angle, and structural shapes using blueprints, sketches, and templates.
  • Fit, align, and tack-weld bulkheads, decks, shell plating, and frames in preparation for final welding.
  • Install foundations, brackets, clips, stiffeners, and inserts to precise dimensions and tolerances.
  • Use fairing techniques, jigs, strongbacks, and wedges to align structural members.
  • Remove and replace damaged plating, inserts, and stiffeners on hull and interior structures.
  • Burn, cut, and bevel steel with oxy-acetylene, plasma, or air-arc equipment as required.
  • Lay out reference lines, frames, and points using measuring instruments, levels, and laser alignment tools.
  • Prepare surfaces for welding by grinding, chipping, or mechanical cleaning.
  • Inspect assemblies for alignment, level, and fit using straightedges, squares, and feeler gauges.
  • Install watertight closures, penetrations, hatches, and manholes.
  • Work in tanks, bilges, overheads, and confined spaces following all safety protocols.
  • Comply with NAVSEA Standard Item 009-74 (Occupational Safety and Health Requirements) and AMP United procedures.
  • Participates in pre-job briefs, toolbox talks, and post-job reviews with AMP United and NNSY supervision.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to interpret ship-construction drawings, blueprints, and TWDs.
  • Proficiency in layout, fabrication, and alignment techniques.
  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Item 009-12, MIL-STD-1689A, and NSTM 505.
  • Skilled in the safe use of cutting, grinding, and measuring tools.
  • Understanding of structural welding joint design and fit-up requirements.
  • Ability to perform precise measurements and verify dimensional tolerances.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, spatial awareness, and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with shipboard compartmentation and confined-space procedures.

Training and Certification Requirements

Shipfitter personnel must complete and maintain the following before assignment:

  • Hazard Communication
  • Confined / Enclosed Space Entry
  • Respiratory
  • Fall Protection
  • Hot-Work / Fire Watch
  • Lockout / Tagout (HEC / LOTP)
  • Lead and Chromium (VI) Awareness
  • Shipyard Mandatory Annual Training
  • First Aid / CPR certification

Security and Access Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and pass all background, drug, and security checks.
  • Must possess or obtain a Secret Clearance.

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of a formal shipfitter, welder, or structural-fabrication apprenticeship or military trade school preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of verifiable shipfitting or structural-fabrication experience, including two (2) years aboard U.S. Navy vessels.
  • Experience in steel plate fit-up, insert replacement, and foundation fabrication required.
  • Knowledge of welding procedures, distortion control, and QA documentation preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and handle rigging gear and hardware for extended periods.
  • Prolonged standing, bending, and climbing on scaffolds, ladders, and ship structures.
  • Must wear required PPE (hard hat, FR clothing, safety shoes, gloves, eye / ear protection, and harness).
  • Must maintain fitness for duty and respirator qualification.

Pay: $24.00 - $33.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 40 per week
