Position Description

The Exhibition Carpenter and Assistant Preparator coordinates the daily activities of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (ACMAA) woodshop. In supporting the Carter’s mission, vision, and values, the Exhibition Carpenter and Assistant Preparator maintains shop equipment, supplies, inventory items, and storage areas. They produce picture frames and display fixtures and provide carpentry and construction design. When not engaged with projects or maintenance at the woodshop/warehouse, they work at the Museum to perform preparation, installation, and maintenance of collections and exhibitions and galleries and assist with art shipments. This position requires work to be done onsite full time.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the safe operation of woodshop equipment; train and supervise staff in the proper use of shop tools, equipment, and related safety procedures as necessary.  Order and maintain lumber and supplies using museum budgetary guidelines.
  • Produce picture frames as directed by Sr Preparator/Prep Lab Manager.  Assist with the design and production of display and interpretation fixtures as directed by the Sr. Manager of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs. 
  • Assist the Preparation department with record keeping for the casework, vitrine, crate, and frame inventories.
  • Assist with the installation, receiving, shipping, and general handling of works of art as directed. Adhere to exhibition schedules and shipping deadlines.
  • Assist with the matting and framing of works of art in the permanent collection for exhibition, photography, storage, and loans. 
  • Clean, paint and/or refinish display walls and fixtures in exhibition areas. 
  • Conduct scheduled gallery inspections to ensure that works of art are secure, properly displayed, and clean. 
  • Maintain records pertaining to the equipment and supplies in the ACMAA woodshop; maintain inventory of items in the IPS storage areas at the warehouse.  Submit recommendations for repairs or new shop equipment to the Sr. Manager of Exhibitions and Curatorial Affairs for budgetary consideration.
  • Perform museum courier duties when requested.
  • Provide technical assistance for the construction of approved projects designed for galleries or public spaces for other departments as time allows.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all proprietary museum information.
  • Assist facilities and other departments with shipment receiving, routine inspections and other needs at the warehouse.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Requirements

  • Demonstrated carpentry skills; knowledge of casework construction, packing materials, crate design and construction; use of cements, glues, paints, and solvents.
  • Trained in forklift operation
  • Driving capabilities for 16’ box truck
  • Experience using hand and power tools; general mechanical skills.
  • Commitment to the proper care of works of art and awareness of preservation, storage, and handling techniques. 
  • Experience handling, matting, and framing works of art a plus.
  • Must be able to work from ladders and move objects safely, able to operate equipment, able to lift and move items up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to remain in a standing or stationary position for extended periods, operate standard office equipment and navigate Museum facilities.
  • Must be able to wear and use required PPE and walk up and down stairs.
  • Computer proficiency with MS Office products. The design software Vectorworks is to be learned on the job.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with various mounting techniques used by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art.
  • Demonstrated understanding of safely and physically moving artwork, tools, equipment, and self within restricted areas (vaults, galleries, etc.) and public areas (galleries, offices, hallways, etc.) when the museum is both open and closed to the public.

Qualifications:

Qualifications/Education

  • B.F.A. or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Minimum five years related to art museum, gallery, or fine carpentry experience preferred.

Other Job Requirements

  • Must be available for travel as required.
  • Smartphone required.
  • Must successfully complete MVR, post-offer background, and drug screen.
  • Transportation to and from the Museum and Warehouse, a daily requirement.
