What are the responsibilities and job description for the Amherst Regional Highschool Department Chair(s) position at Amherst Pelham Regional School District?
Reports to: Principal or Assistant Principal
Job Goals:
- To provide curriculum leadership and collaborative coordination that ensures the development, alignment, and articulation of the curriculum while maintaining standards of excellence in teaching and promoting excellence within the department.
- To support the principals by managing the business of the department and by participating in school-wide planning.
The primary responsibilities of a Department Chair shall include but are not
limited to the following:
- Instructional Leadership:
Provide guidance on curriculum alignment, instructional practices, and
content delivery to ensure consistency and academic rigor within the
department.
- Facilitation of Collaboration:
Lead regular department meetings, promote professional dialogue, and
support the development and sharing of effective teaching strategies among
department members.
- Curriculum and Assessment Coordination:
Support the development, implementation, and review of course materials,
common assessments, and instructional resources aligned with district and
state standards.
- Communication and Liaison Duties:
Serve as a communication bridge between the department and school
administration, articulating instructional needs, priorities, and feedback.
- Support of Department Operations:
Assist with scheduling input, course sequencing, new teacher orientation,
purchasing, participating in hiring committees and ensuring adherence to
department-wide expectations (e.g., grading policies, syllabi).
- Documentation and Reporting:
Provide written summaries of departmental instructional practices, priorities,
and identified needs to the building principal upon request.
Term of Employment:
The department chair will be appointed by the superintendent upon recommendation of the principal for a three-year term starting August 2026.
Evaluated by:
Department chairs are directly supervised and evaluated by the principals.
