Associate or Full Professor of Classics

Amherst College
Amherst, MA Full Time
POSTED ON 7/8/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 8/5/2026
Department of Classics

Location: Amherst, MA

Open Date: Jun 09, 2026

Description

The Department of Classics at Amherst College invites applications for two positions-a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor of classics and a full-time tenured position at the rank of associate or full professor of classics. The appointment with tenure will be contingent upon a positive tenure review. Both positions will begin on July 1, 2027, and both require a Ph.D. in classics or a related field by the start of the appointment.

In addition to having a well-articulated research plan, successful candidates will be committed to undergraduate and interdisciplinary teaching in a liberal-arts context and must be able to teach with distinction Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as courses of general appeal in the field of Greco-Roman studies broadly defined. There are also opportunities for cross-disciplinary teaching in the college's First-Year Seminar Program and other collaborations. The teaching load is two courses per semester, normally three language courses per year. The ability to direct writing and research at all undergraduate levels will be expected. The successful candidate will also be expected to advise senior thesis projects and to participate in the life of the college and the department.

We seek to identify candidates whose research interests complement those already represented among departmental faculty, and who can help us expand and diversify our offerings. The areas of research specialization are open and include: visual and material culture; rhetoric, law, and democracy; social and cultural history; performance and reception; and knowledge production (scientific and technical). Successful candidates for both positions will be expected to have an original and generative set of research projects and, for the tenured position, to have a superior record of publication, teaching, and professional service.
