Position Summary

To ensure that our schools are safe, predictable, and responsive for all students, the Dean of Student and school culture will strive to create a structured, positive and academically-focused school culture. S/he will model how to build strong, mutually respectful relationships with students and families and support teachers to do the same. S/he serves as the team leader for student accountability (discipline) and identification of additional resources and programs for families (academic support, enrichment, preventative programs, etc.) for grades 6-8. The Dean is the keeper of culture, ensuring that our school’s ways of being support high levels of student growth and achievement. This position requires a creative and inspiring professional with adult leadership experience, high energy, excellent organizational abilities and a talent for creating a warm and supportive environment for students. The Dean will serve as a member of the administrative team dedicated to cultivating excellence throughout the school and community.

Requirements

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Steward of school culture

  • Develops and administers disciplinary procedures in accordance with organizational policies, and applicable laws
  • Receives referrals and confers with students, parents, teachers, community agencies, and law enforcement; responds to and resolves parent, student, and staff concerns and complaints;
  • Serves on discipline or expulsion panels as assigned.
  • Supervises students on campus and monitors students during arrival & departure, lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities; instructs students in appropriate behavior; disciplines students in accordance with established guidelines;
  • Leads by positive example;
  • Communicates high expectations for both staff and students and provides appropriate motivation to reach expectations;
  • Implement a school-wide behavior management system with meaningful incentives and consequences ;
  • Own the school’s character development efforts;
  • Conduct regular school culture walkthroughs to help staff maintain a high bar of excellence.
  • Supervise school entry, breakfast, lunch, dismissal, and transitions to ensure they are orderly and positive;
  • Model a school-wide culture of respect and support of students;
  • Prioritize academic learning, resiliency and support for students;
  • Models strengths-based, growth-mindset approach to maintaining a strong school culture;
  • Oversee the development and implementation of student supports and intervention;
  • Evaluate student yearly objectives and goals through accountability procedures and outcomes and make necessary adjustments;
  • Ensure clear and consistent implementation of student accountability practices amongst staff;
  • Monitors and organizes attendance functions; prepares letters, calls parents, and attends meetings as needed, regarding absent or tardy students; provides leadership for attendance improvement efforts.
  • Create, implement and maintain systems for collecting and tracking data on school culture metrics, including suspensions and staff /student attendance;
  • Oversee behavioral interventions, including family meetings, mediations, suspensions and expulsion hearings;
  • Support staff to create and sustain classroom management systems that ensure a focus on learning and student success;
  • Implement and follow policies and procedures for student dress code, discipline and other policies related to maintaining a positive school culture of learning and achievement;
  • Facilitate faculty and staff development related to school culture and consistent enforcement of student discipline.

Site Administration Support

  • Participates as needed in Individual Educational Plan meetings;
  • Oversees the Student Study Teams and Multi-Tiered Support service model at site;
  • Keeps the importance of site cleanliness and inspirational and motivational slogans, posters quotes throughout the school and classrooms;
  • Liaison to the after school program in collaboration with school staff and/or personnel from outside agencies;
  • Assist the Site director, Dean of Instruction, and/or VP with creating, and executing clear and consistent grading standards and practices for staff;
  • Supervise the consistent and fair administration of school policies regarding student conduct and discipline ;
  • Assists Site Director in staff classroom observations and instructional coaching as needed;
  • Make habits of scholars visible across the school through usage of signage;
  • Assists Site Director with recruiting, screening, hiring, training, and evaluation of the school personnel as needed;
  • Designs opportunities to build staff culture;
  • Assists Site Director in providing orientation for newly assigned staff members ;
  • Assists Site Director with data dives and assessment processes;

Stakeholder and Community Relations

  • Works with the Family Staff Team (FST) to support parent trainings, workshops, and requirements (LCAPS, Single Site Plan, WASC…..);
  • Solicits information from school personnel, students and community in gauging the school climate through surveys and other measures;
  • Serves as liaison to parents and facilitate parent education and involvement, including reinforcing the need for parents to support the school’s policies and practices for student discipline, dress code, homework, and events;
  • Works with parent leader groups to promote student outcomes, scholar habits and school accountability;
  • Models and facilitates good human relations skills; effectively interacts with others
  • Advance the educational mission of the school by participating in duties and responsibilities consistent with building, upholding and promoting a strong community connection;
  • Maintains communication with the appropriate home office administrators informed of school activities and problems such as transportation, special services, discipline, etc.
  • Keeps the community informed about school activities through newsletters, news releases, and attendance at parent meetings, etc.

Qualifications

Mandatory

  • Bachelor’s Degree;
  • CBEST certificate;
  • Minimum of three years of school wide, and/or classroom teaching experience.

PHYSICAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The position is in a school building, which may be air conditioned and heated. May be exposed to prolonged noise or weather. This type of work will involve walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods. Stooping, squatting, kneeling, overhead reaching and repetitive bending may be involved frequently with this position. -Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far. Vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity. Must be able to climb stairs and sit for extended periods of time. Requires finger dexterity to operate equipment, handle work with various, materials and objects are important aspects of this job.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $95,000-$105,000. Salary is commensurate with experience, education, and expertise. A competitive benefits package is also offered.

This is a full-time, exempt, 100% in-person position.
