The City known as the Town of Amesbury is an attractive New England community on the perimeter of metropolitan Boston. Incorporated in 1668, the city’s location on two major interstates (I-95 and I-495) allows its 17,000 residents to take advantage of an easy commute to Boston as well as numerous nearby coastal and mountainous recreational opportunities.
With roots as a farming community, Amesbury’s location on the Merrimack River gave way to a rise in mill buildings in the early 1800’s. The city’s mill buildings manufactured a variety of items with the most popular being carriages and textiles. The manufacture of automobile bodies began in the late 1800s and continued until the start of the Great Depression.
Amesbury has mindfully retained significant amounts of open space, revitalized and created a vibrant downtown, and maintains a supportive and harmonious local government.
The city offers many cultural and recreational opportunities including a scenic river walk, parks, playgrounds, and celebrates Amesbury Days, an annual citywide event designed to showcase Amesbury’s unique heritage.
