Financial Counselor (Patient Access)

Overview:

Our client, seeks an accomplished Financial Counselor (Patient Access).

*** Duration: 8-week contract with the possibility of extensions

Notes:

• Pay Rate: $21.88/hr on W2.
• Onsite role.
• High-risk workplace violence certification required within 6 months of hire.
• Work Schedule: Mon – Fri, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Description:

• The Representative supports patients, families, and the care team by managing financial counseling, insurance verification, and payment collection processes.
• This role ensures patients are financially cleared for services, understands their financial responsibilities, and assists with securing authorizations and eligibility for care.
• Verify insurance eligibility, benefit coverage, and obtain pre-certifications/authorizations for services.
• Collect upfront patient financial responsibility, including deductibles and balances.
• Provide accurate estimates and explain payment options to patients.
• Assist patients with financial counseling, including charity programs and payment plans.
• Ensure all required admission documents are completed (HIPAA, financial agreements, consent forms, etc.).
• Maintain compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.
• Review Medicare accounts, MSP, and CWF to ensure proper billing and coverage.
• Communicate with case management, social services, and internal teams regarding account status.
• Facilitate patient registration and admissions as needed.
• Track and follow up on payment plans and missed payments within defined timelines.
• Educate self-pay patients on available community resources and care options.
• Utilize hospital systems for registration and documentation processes.
• Meet departmental quality assurance standards and collection metrics.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Education: High School Diploma or GED required.
• Certifications: High-risk workplace violence certification (within 6 months of hire).
• Minimum 3 years of experience in hospital, medical office, or healthcare setting.
• Insurance eligibility and benefits verification.
• Pre-certification and authorization processes.
• Patient financial responsibility estimation and collection.
• Knowledge of third-party reimbursement (HMO/PPO).
• Basic medical terminology.
• Strong customer service, communication (verbal & written), and organizational skills.

Nice to haves:

• Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR) certification.
• Experience with Medicare, Medi-Cal, and charity programs.
• Familiarity with hospital registration systems and revenue cycle processes.
• Experience handling payment plans and collections.
• Knowledge of healthcare compliance and regulatory standards.
