What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Associate - Austin Creative Reuse Volunteer Programs position at AmeriCorps?
The City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program works with City departments and local nonprofits to build capacity, in order to provide resources and services to the Austin neighborhoods and communities that may otherwise be left behind by Austin's historic disparities and future growth. The AmeriCorps members serving with the City of Austin AmeriCorps VISTA Program work in such diverse fields as education, health, legal services, and housing to cover the myriad ways poverty affects these neighborhoods and communities. Austin Creative Reuse (ACR) supports local needs by assisting the community in diverting usable school supplies and creative materials from the landfill and making those materials accessible to (among others) local schools, educators and nonprofit partners that serve area students, thus improving students' access to high quality educational experiences. There is a growing depth of research over the last decade demonstrating the role of arts education in improving outcomes for low income K-12 students.
Member Duties : Recruit and train volunteers for Austin Creative Reuse summer learning arts education for low-income Austin youth. Prepare for and lead volunteers (including large groups) through volunteer projects designed to return salvaged/donated materials to the community. Collect and record impact data, including volunteer testimonials, from volunteer programs. Iterate and expand on Austin Creative Reuse’s existing volunteer management program to recruit new volunteers and increase volunteer hours contributed to the organization. Art education boosts academic performance, social-emotional skills, reduces stress and improves focus and communication that all contributes to giving students the skills needed to build a pathway out of poverty.
