What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Engagement & Systems Support VISTA position at AmeriCorps and Careers?
This program strengthens community engagement systems that increase awareness of services, participation opportunities, and pathways to stability for low-income residents. The VISTA focuses on building sustainable outreach infrastructure, volunteer coordination tools, engagement workflows, and data tracking systems that improve access to information and strengthen participation rather than delivering direct services. The member develops outreach calendars, messaging toolkits, volunteer onboarding workflows, engagement dashboards, and standardized communication templates. These systems support consistent communication, stronger volunteer mobilization, and improved coordination across community initiatives. The member completes Mental Health Advocate Training to ensure trauma-informed outreach practices, cultural humility, and responsible engagement with vulnerable populations. Community of Hearts is a West Michigan–based nonprofit dedicated to improving access to mental health education, wellness resources, and community support for underserved populations. The organization addresses gaps in culturally responsive mental health services for low-income families, students, seniors, and communities of color. Programs include Stress Less Student initiatives, mental health advocate trainings, workplace wellness outreach, and community wellness hubs that connect residents to local service providers. Community of Hearts partners with schools, healthcare providers, faith institutions, local businesses, and social service agencies to reduce stigma, increase early intervention, and strengthen pathways to care. The Community Engagement & Systems Support VISTA increases organizational capacity by strengthening outreach systems, partnership tracking, volunteer coordination, and program operations workflows, expanding the organization’s ability to serve residents effectively and equitably. All activities are nonpartisan and exclude political, lobbying, or electoral work.
