EQUIPMENT OPERATOR – UTILITY CONSTRUCTION

Americom Technologies LLC is looking for a highly motivated individual to join our team in our OSP Department. The OSP Department is responsible for underground infrastructure placing conduit, fiber, and copper to support telecommunications, data networks, and fire mitigation.

JOB SUMMARY
The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment to support the installation, maintenance, and repair of underground utility systems. This skilled role requires a strong understanding of utility construction practices and the ability to operate various machinery including mini excavators, backhoes, trenchers, and skid steers. The Equipment Operator ensures that work is completed in accordance with safety standards, project specifications, and company policies, contributing to the overall success of field operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate construction equipment including backhoes, trenchers, mini-excavators, and skid steers for utility installation and maintenance.
- Perform hand digging, potholing, loading and unloading materials, and other manual labor tasks as needed.
- Accurately verify and follow utility locate markings to prevent damage and ensure safe digging practices.
- Assist in site restoration, housekeeping, and maintaining a clean and safe work area.
- Support project documentation and assist with job hazard analyses (JHAs) and safety audits.
- Train and mentor laborers and less experienced crew members in safe and effective field practices.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment including greasing, fueling, and basic part replacement.
- Serve as lead operator in the absence of the foreman, ensuring work progresses according to plan.
- Read and understand equipment manuals and grade control technologies.
- Conduct inspections and complete required paperwork related to equipment condition, safety, and compliance.
- Attend safety training sessions (in-person and online) and participate in continuing education.
- Perform general job site responsibilities such as pressure washing, material handling, security checks, and recordkeeping.
- Uphold company safety standards and follow all policies and procedures without exception.
- Execute tasks in high-risk areas involving live utilities, maintaining awareness of depth and placement.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support project and operational needs.
- Coordinate with Superintendent, subcontractors, inspectors, utility representatives and other crew members.
- Provide daily updates on progress, issues, delays, and support needs.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience operating heavy equipment in underground utility construction.
- Proven ability to work safely in confined spaces, trenches, and high-risk environments.
- Experience with trenchless technologies and utility systems (water, sewer, electrical, gas) preferred.
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
- MSHA and OSHA certifications are preferred.
- Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) preferred.
- Ability to lift up to 80 lbs. and work on feet for extended periods.
- Able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and around moving equipment.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screen and Level 4 background check.
CERTIFICATIONS (PREFERRED)
- OSHA 10 and/or OSHA 30
- Competent Person certification
- Class A CDL
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Outdoor work in varied weather conditions (heat, cold, wind, etc.)
- Exposure to noise, heavy equipment, and construction environments
- Travel between multiple job sites as required.
- Able to lift up to 80 lbs.
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Climb ladders, enter trenches, vaults, manholes, and confined spaces.
