Lead Cook/Team Leader

Perched in the sandy forested shore of Lake Michigan, Miniwanca is a positive youth development camp of the American Youth Foundation. We are seeking the right food professional to help our Food Program efforts to serve youth campers healthy meals, while also teaching them the importance and joys of healthy food choices both while at camp and at home.

Food Program Leaders have experience and passion for cooking, making meals from scratch, preparing meals for any dietary need, and leading a team with empathy, respect, and effective communication. They are responsible for supervising, teaching, and coaching a team of 5 or more, guiding the team through the preparation and service of meals, maintaining a clean and organized kitchen, responsible management of inventory and resources, and ensuring a positive environment and healthy, safe meals for staff and campers. Leaders may also occasionally be responsible for facilitating culinary interest groups with youth participants. A current Food Manager ServSafe certification and a minimum of 3 year’s food service experience, with at least 1 year in a management or supervisory capacity are required for this position.

Position Description

This position is seasonal, full-time, from mid- June to mid-September with the possibility of extending into October for the right candidate. Weekends are required.

  • Provide nutritious meals for groups from 80-250
  • Co-supervise kitchen staff
  • Ensure kitchen facilities meet national and state health and safety standards
  • Help plan and assist in preparation of special meals (allergies, special events, etc.)
  • Be a positive and flexible team player
  • Be professional in all job tasks by taking the job seriously, showing up on time and ready to work

Position Responsibilities:

  • This position requires a commitment to “camp life”, including residing at the camp for the duration of training and two, three-week summer camp sessions. Housing and all meals are provided for staff throughout the employment period.
  • Supervise and lead the Food Program team with kindness, empathy and respect, participating in training, team meetings, providing support, and taking on responsibilities as directed.
  • Effectively and efficiently teach proper culinary and food management skills to staff of varying levels of experience/training.
  • Facilitate and participate in the preparation of meals, accommodating specialty diets and allergies for staff and participants.
  • Create new recipes, utilizing available products to minimize waste.
  • Receive and stock orders.
  • Accurate and effective inventory management, utilizing FIFO strategy.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of all food prep and storage areas, tools, and equipment.
  • Practice safe food handling procedures, according to local, state, federal, and ACA regulations.
  • Complete all job functions, including requested records, written reports, and other duties as assigned.
  • Solution-based problem solving and positive communication.
  • Maintain effective mental, emotional, and social interactions with staff and campers.
  • Support the organization’s mission and vision with integrity, dependability, and accountability.

This position pays competitively with the option of room and board. Candidates may also commute.
