Illinois American Water is seeking a Utility Operator to help execute operations at our 6-8 mgd wastewater treatment plant in Granite City. In this role, you will learn all aspects of the treatment facility including lab testing, operating, identifying maintenance needs, and more. The ideal candidate will have a good mechanical aptitude, be able to work independently, and possess strong time management and communication skills.
Posted rate: $29.43/hr ($1 shift differential for 3rd shift)
This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.

Primary Role
The successful candidate will be responsible for the duties necessary to maintain and ensure reliable operations of the Granite City Wastewater Plant facilities.
Key Accountabilities
- Operate and monitor plant operations using SCADA control systems
- Perform maintenance duties when not operating, including receiving and testing chemical deliveries
- Conduct general maintenance of treatment facilities and outlying stations
- Perform housekeeping tasks and other duties as assigned by management
- Maintain the ability to work as a filter plant operator, operator leadman, and laboratory technician
- Fill vacancies and perform normal and/or additional duties in these classifications as required to ensure proper plant operations
- Perform these responsibilities in addition to normal daily duties
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Strong mechanical skills
- SCADA operation experience
- Clear understanding of plant operations, with a strong work ethic and effective time management, communication, organizational, and team membership skills
- Clear understanding of plant and pumping station operations, including pumps, chemical feed systems, and system adjustments
- Valid driver license
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
- Computer literacy required
- 0-2 years in wastewater industry
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Chemistry, science, and mechanical subjects are highly desirable
- Employees hired are required by Article 12 section 5 to obtain an IEPA license in accordance with the timeframes outlined in the CBA; Class 4 within 1 year of hire date; Class 3 within 2 years of hire date; Class 2 within 4 years of hire date and Class 1 within 5 years of hire date.
