This position is a hybrid position with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. Work hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Primary Role
The GIS Technician is responsible for ensuring GIS network data is complete, accurate and current by using standard operating procedures and GIS editing best practices to proactively gather, interpret and process edits from a variety of sources. This includes all work activities for installations, replacements, relocations, repairs, excavations, and locating, as well as GNSS data collection, field comments, and general cleanup identified via QAQC.
Key Accountabilities
- Uses GIS to create and maintain spatial and attribute data following standard operating procedures and GIS editing best practices.
- Ability to learn and understand the basics of water and wastewater network structures and apply learned knowledge when creating and maintaining American Water GIS data.
- Ability to learn and understand how to interpret and process a variety of source GIS inputs, to include GNSS data, construction as-builts (CAD and/or PDF), field sketches / comments (web submitted, paper, and/or verbal), and tabular data.
- Assist in the development of GIS standard operating procedures and best practices. Participate on user committees within AW for sharing GIS expertise.
- Ability to review and identify missing, incorrect, or questionable input source GIS data, as well as identify and repair quality issues within existing GIS data.
- Continue to develop expertise in GIS. Participates in workshops, training, or vendor presentations introducing new/evolving GIS technology.
- Adhere to and support standard operating procedures and GNSS best practices
- Proactively provide active feedback to state GIS lead, as well as providing and soliciting input and feedback from other team members.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge/Skills
- Demonstrated basic computer literacy and competence.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrated time management skills; ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines.
- Knowledge of personal computing and Windows based software applications such as Windows, Microsoft Word and Excel; and internet skills
- Ability to learn and understand the basic water and wastewater network structures.
- Ability to learn Esri ArcGIS suite of Products, specifically ArcMap and/or ArcGIS Pro with a focus on creating and editing GIS data.
Experience/Education
Associate’s degree or related experience.
0-2 years’ experience with GIS and/or related course work.
