Job Description:
Summary:
The Program Assistant (PA) is an undergraduate part-time student staff member of the SIS Global Scholars Program and collaborates with Housing & Residence Life. The PA fulfills a vital role in the residence hall system by helping students integrate learning experiences gained from both inside and outside of the classroom. The primary function of the PA is to enhance the out-of-classroom learning for students in the Three-Year Scholars Program. Additionally, the PA is responsible for facilitating interpersonal relationships and creating living communities that maximize the opportunities for students to learn and grow.
The Three-Year Scholars Program provides first year students with opportunities to create connections among in-class instruction, residential living, and out-of-class experiences. The PA reports to the Global Scholars Program Director, who serves as the primary supervisor of the PA. The PA is also expected to work closely with other staff members within the residence hall, other faculty, as well as campus partners. Emphasis is placed on the concept that the PA is an active and integral staff member within the total campus community. The PA is in a position of responsibility and leadership that extends beyond the immediate scope of the class and floor community.
Essential Functions:
Administration:
  • Attend one-on-one meetings with faculty supervisor as needed.
  • Compile accurate and timely reports for supervisor as requested.
  • Treat information concerning staff and/or students with the utmost confidentiality.
  • Attend, if required by the Global Scholars faculty members, all scheduled class/seminar sections.
  • Participate in and host four (4) weekly office hours on residence hall floor.
Community Facilitation:
  • Serve as a leader (in collaboration with Resident Assistant staff) in developing and facilitating an environment on the floor in which students can grow and learn socially as well as academically.
  • Support residents within the limits of the PAs training and ability and make the appropriate referrals to hall staff concerning topics of academic, personal, and social manners.
  • Develop connections with each student living within the living learning community. Be visible and available to the residents.
  • Work to promote a sense of tolerance and consideration in the attitudes and behaviors of students living on the floor.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and the Global Scholars Program faculty members, and students and the Community Director.
  • Have a working knowledge of the University’s facilities, services, and resources.
Role Modeling and Policy Compliance:
  • Be well versed in and personally abide by University policies including the Housing License Agreement. PAs must also abide by all regulations in federal and local jurisdictions.
  • Understand that all actions of a PA (including those engaged in outside of the residence hall) are observed by residents, other PAs and staff members. PAs must hold themselves to a higher standard in all actions.
Team Member:
  • Maintain positive relationships with fellow student staff members, Global Scholars faculty, and the University staff.
  • Participate in recruitment, selection and training.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with supervisor, fellow PAs and RAs, Housing & Residence Life and the Global Scholars Program by checking staff mail, phone messages, and email messages on a daily basis. PAs are required to utilize their designated AU account for any university related matters.
  • Support efforts and initiatives of the Global Scholars Program, and Housing & Residence Life in enhancing the living-learning community and participate in program common events and hall initiatives.
Programming:
  • Plan and implement at least three opportunities for students in the living-learning course/seminar in collaboration with course faculty to support and enhance student learning.
  • Attend all required Global Scholars Program course/seminar sessions.
  • Incorporate common events, planned Welcome Week events, and required sessions into programming.
  • Support floor Resident Assistants in planning and implementing floor events and social opportunities.

The PA must be in good judicial standing with the University at the time of application and hiring, and must remain so throughout their time as a PA. Good judicial standing is defined as students not being on probation with the University.
  • PAs must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 and a semester GPA of 2.75 while employed. PAs must meet both the cumulative and the semester GPA requirements from the date of application until the date of separation.
