Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and cardiac drip titration skills.
Details
- 56-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in an inpatient hospital setting
- Adult patient population with diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN patient ratio of 1:4 on PCU/Tele (days and nights)
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required — every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
- Holiday coverage required for every other holiday during the contracted timeframe
- Floating required in rotation with other travelers to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (depending on experience), and Observation
- Charting system: Epic (preferred); also uses Alaris and Omnicell
- Centralized telemetry monitoring available 24/7 for tele reading and alarm notifications
Requirements
- Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) state or Compact license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills required
- Proficiency in cardiac and vasoactive drip titration required (Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and occasional Betablockers/antihypertensives)
- Skills required: IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance
- Epic EMR experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require manager approval
- Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are considered only with more than 2 years of RN experience
- Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning in a travel capacity
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), two free-floating charge nurses (24/7), phlebotomy (24/7 for peripheral draws), a flex resource nurse, respiratory therapy (24/7), and 24/7 in-house hospitalists
- Providers are contacted via paging system and secure chat
- Orientation consists of 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour precepted shifts
- Attendance at pre-shift huddles is required at 0625 (days) or 1825 (nights) in the 7th floor conference room
- RNs may occasionally be asked to precept students
- Monthly audits for pre/post pain scoring — 90% compliance required
- No time off (RTO) approved during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August); up to 7 days of RTO may be approved outside of this period
- Required scrub color for RNs: Navy Blue

- The unit uses a team nursing model on the med/surg floor (6th floor), pairing RNs with LPNs who carry their own patient loads with some task-sharing based on scope of practice
