American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position at a Level 2 trauma center in Rapid City, SD, requiring a minimum of 2 years of ED experience and multiple certifications including TNCC and PALS.
Details- Fast-paced Emergency Department in a hospital setting, seeing 150–180 patients daily
- Main ED has 33 beds, including 8 Trauma/Resuscitation beds, 4 Behavioral Health rooms, and a vertical care area for lower-acuity patients (ESI 3 & 4)
- Level 2 trauma center with a heavy trauma population, including stab wounds, GSWs, MVCs, drownings, and falls — particularly active during summer months
- Certified Complete Stroke Center, capable of treating stroke symptoms up to 24 hours from onset
- Patient population spans neonates to geriatric, including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, GI bleeds, cardiac cases, and critically ill pediatric patients
- Cardiac catheterization lab on-site and a PICU for critically ill pediatric patients
- RN patient ratio is 1:4–5
- Variable 12-hour shifts; possible shift times include 0630–1900, 1000–2230, 1200–0030, 1400–0200, and 1830–0700 — travelers will not work both days and nights within the same week
- Weekend work is possible depending on staffing needs
- No on-call requirements
- Charts using Epic; also uses Omnicell and Alaris
- Epic experience is preferred; please note if you do not have Epic experience
- May float to inpatient Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU as a task nurse only (not taking a full assignment)
- Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or Compact license required
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS
- CPI or MAB/MOAB certification preferred
- Minimum 2 years of ED experience (excluding travel experience) strongly preferred
- Candidates with 1.5 years of ED experience (excluding travel) plus 2 years in another clinical setting may be considered with manager approval
- Proficiency with ESI triage assessments
- Strong critical thinking, communication, and patient prioritization skills
- Experience caring for the full range of patient types seen in this ED, including trauma and pediatric populations
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
- Travelers are expected to participate in sexual assault (SA) patient care, including evidence collection such as buccal swabs, fingernail scrapings, clothing collection, and victim interviews — pelvic exams are not performed by travelers; a resource booklet and a 24/7 SA Quality Coordinator are available for support
- Triage responsibilities include ESI assessments and determining patient acuity and care priority
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Strong unit support includes 24/7 charge nurse coverage, ED techs, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, security, pharmacy tech, radiology/CT, and 24/7 physician, hospitalist, and NP coverage
- Orientation includes 8 hours of facility NEO, 4 hours of ED-specific education, and a minimum of two 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Navy scrubs required
- Free parking available on-site
- Holidays required only if needed
- Time off requests require manager approval; no RTO will be approved during the first three weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
