What are the responsibilities and job description for the Project Surveyor – CAD Production (PSM or SIT) position at American Surveying Inc?
THE OPPORTUNITY
American Surveying, Inc. is seeking a hands-on survey professional who can independently turn field data and survey records into accurate, well-organized CAD drawings. An active Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) license is preferred. Florida-certified Surveyor and Mapper Interns (SIT/LSIT) with strong production drafting skills and a verifiable path to PSM licensure within approximately 12 months will also be considered.
This is one opening with two qualifying candidate paths. Hands-on production drafting is required for both paths. The position is not a management-only or drawing-review-only role. Initially, most of your work will involve personally processing survey data and preparing drawings, alongside boundary analysis, quality control, and project coordination appropriate to your qualifications. Production work will remain an important part of the position as responsibilities develop.
You will work alongside our existing Survey Manager, drafting staff, and field crews. We are adding this position to increase survey production capacity, improve turnaround times, and strengthen continuity across our survey operations. This is an additional position, not a replacement for our current drafting staff.
ABOUT AMERICAN SURVEYING
We are an established Tampa-based land surveying firm serving commercial, residential, and multi-site clients throughout Florida. Our work includes boundary surveys, ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys, topographic surveys, elevation certificates, as-built surveys, and related construction and real estate surveying services.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Personally process electronic field data and prepare survey drawings from initial project setup through a complete, organized deliverable ready for the applicable professional review and issuance process.
- Interpret deeds, plats, title commitments, easements, legal descriptions, and field evidence; identify discrepancies and help resolve technical questions within your assigned authority.
- Check field-to-CAD work for appropriate units, coordinate references, closures, elevations, annotations, and drawing completeness.
- Coordinate with field crews and the reviewing PSM to identify missing information early, clarify field observations, and reduce avoidable rework.
- Manage your assigned production priorities, communicate project status and blockers, and assist with technical client communications as appropriate.
- Help maintain usable CAD standards, templates, documentation, and quality-control procedures that support consistent work and cross-coverage.
Licensed PSMs will assume responsible charge of assigned work within their competence and sign and seal applicable deliverables prepared under their direct control and personal supervision. Professional authority will reflect licensure, demonstrated ability, and assigned responsibility.
SIT employees will work under the supervision of a Florida PSM and will not independently sign or seal professional deliverables. Their assignments will include appropriate boundary-analysis and progressively responsible technical work to support professional development, not solely routine drafting.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- Demonstrated ability to independently produce land surveying drawings, including Florida boundary and ALTA/NSPS work. Experience with topographic and as-built surveys is also valuable.
- Strong production capability in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or comparable survey CAD software, and the ability to work effectively within ASI's production environment. Please identify the software you actually use.
- Experience processing electronic field data and interpreting survey research and supporting records.
- Willingness to spend most of the initial workweek personally producing drawings and processing survey data, rather than only supervising others.
- Clear communication, organized project documentation, and a collaborative approach to working with field crews, drafting staff, and professional surveyors.
Candidates must have either an active Florida PSM license in good standing or current Florida SIT certification with a documented, credible path to PSM licensure within approximately 12 months. Newly licensed PSMs with strong production skills are encouraged to apply. SIT applicants should be prepared to explain their remaining education, experience, examination, and application requirements.
WORK SETTING
This is a full-time, primarily office-based, in-person position in Tampa. Occasional site visits or field verification may be needed. It is not primarily a field crew position.
COMPENSATION
Florida-certified SIT / licensure-track candidate: $70,000-$80,000 annual base compensation.
Active Florida PSM: $80,000-$95,000 annual base compensation.
Placement within the applicable range depends on demonstrated production drafting proficiency, Florida surveying experience, boundary-analysis ability, and the professional responsibilities assigned. Overtime will be paid where required by applicable law. Compensation and responsibilities for an SIT will be reviewed upon obtaining an active Florida PSM license; no specific increase is promised by this posting.
PAID TIME OFF AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT
Paid holidays are available after 90 days. PTO eligibility is one week after six months, two weeks after one year, and three weeks after five years, administered under company policy.
ASI pays for continuing education required to maintain professional licensure, Florida PSM license renewal, and approved professional membership renewals.
ASI does not currently offer medical, dental, vision, or retirement benefits.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
The position offers an opportunity to contribute to technical standards, production improvements, and broader survey project leadership. Advancement and changes in authority depend on qualifications, performance, and business needs; no particular future title or promotion timeline is guaranteed.
HOW TO APPLY
Submit your resume through Indeed. Describe the types of surveys you personally draft, the CAD and survey software you use, and your current Florida license or intern certification status. SIT applicants should briefly explain their anticipated licensure timeline.
Selected candidates will be invited to discuss their production experience and complete a short, paid, job-related practical exercise. Only share work samples you are authorized to disclose.
