Governance & Board Relations Manager Work Location: Southfield, MI Governance & Board Relations Manager Location: Hybrid/Remote (U.S.) Employment Type: Full-Time The company is seeking an experienced and highly organized Governance & Board Relations Manager to support the effective functioning of its governance structure. This role is ideal for a governance professional who thrives in a mission‑driven environment, enjoys working with volunteer leaders, and excels at bringing clarity, structure, and coordination to complex organizational processes. The Governance & Board Relations Manager serves as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors and key governance committees. This position ensures smooth board and committee operations, maintains governance documentation, and supports volunteer leaders in fulfilling their responsibilities. Working closely with the Executive Director & CEO, board leadership, and internal teams, this role helps strengthen governance practices and supports the ongoing evolution of governance as the organization grows. Key Responsibilities Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors and assigned governance committees, ensuring effective operations and supporting volunteer leaders. Coordinate governance activities including meeting calendars, agenda development, preparation and distribution of materials, documentation of outcomes, and follow‑up on action items. Provide structure and guidance to volunteer committee leaders by outlining roles, timelines, decision processes, and governance expectations. Maintain governance documentation and systems, including bylaws, policies, governance guidelines, and board portal resources. Support onboarding, orientation, and ongoing development of Board members, Officers, and committee leaders through governance guides, reference materials, and training resources. Guide leadership transitions by helping incoming Officers and committee leaders understand governance responsibilities and processes. Monitor governance practices and committee activities to ensure alignment with bylaws, policies, and strategic direction; elevate issues as needed. Coordinate activities across governance committees and internal teams to ensure communication, timeline alignment, and effective implementation of governance decisions. Advise the Executive Director and Board leadership on governance practices, board effectiveness, and emerging governance considerations. Support periodic reviews of board and committee effectiveness and recommend improvements to structures, processes, and documentation. Manage governance‑related projects and special initiatives from the Executive Office. Coordinate logistical planning for board and governance meetings and selected organizational events, including site coordination and vendor engagement. Manage budget development and forecasting for the Executive Office, including oversight of board travel and meeting expenses. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to support organizational initiatives. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in business, nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field; equivalent experience considered. Minimum of 7 years of experience supporting boards, volunteer committees, executive offices, or governance‑focused roles. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with volunteer leaders, senior executives, and cross‑functional teams in a complex environment. Strong organizational and project management skills with exceptional attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing executive‑level materials. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and professionalism. Experience coordinating board or committee meetings and maintaining governance documentation. Familiarity with nonprofit governance practices, bylaws, and parliamentary procedure.
