Job Summary
The Kitchen Operations Team Member is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of food preparation and kitchen operations, preparing meals, and supervising residents and volunteers assigned to the kitchen during his or her shift. This includes coordinating the evaluation and distribution of incoming food donations, ensuring the timely preparation of meals for shelter programs and staff, and maintaining proper inventory management. The role also involves food storage, labeling, and disposal processes and requires adherence to strict sanitation standards and practices to ensure smooth kitchen and dining room operations. The Kitchen Operations Team Member plays a key role in maintaining operational efficiency, workflow and supporting the organization's mission to serve the community.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
- Coordinate, prepare and supervise the preparation of breakfast, lunch, and supper for the resident shelter programs on a limited budget.
- Oversee and manage the distribution of incoming food donations from outside sources.
- Orient, train, supervise and evaluate residents assigned to the kitchen, volunteers, community service groups and others wishing to contribute to a food service venue.
- Document and report unresolved improper resident behaviors to the case manager
- Ensure adequate staffing, coverage and workflow for daily and weekend meal preparation and serving.
- Conduct weekly ordering of food and supplies, utilizing the Central PA Food Bank list and donated foods.
- Oversee proper storage and labeling of frozen, refrigerated, and dry foods.
- Manage food codes and inventory dates to ensure turnover or proper disposal of donated and purchased foods.
- Ensure the proper cleaning, sanitation and maintenance of kitchen and dining room walls, floors, furnishings, equipment, dishes, pot, pans, silverware and other related kitchen and dining room utensils used for meal preparation and presentation.
- Prepare holiday meals including Easter Monday, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day and special events as requested.
- Provide a detailed summary weekly and as requested by the Executive Director of actions taken during assigned shifts to meet the essential duties and responsibilities.
- Demonstrate proper work behaviors by exhibiting traits such as hard work, accountability, integrity, confidentiality, and respect for others.
- Serve as a mentor of residents who have come from backgrounds with barriers to immediate outside employment
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 3 years’ experience in food preparation, storage, and inventory management.
- At least 2 years of experience in menu preparation and meal planning for large groups, including accommodating multiple dietary restrictions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work well with others in proximity.
- Punctuality and effective time management skills
- Ability to work independently with a high level of productivity and accountability
- Professional demeanor and a positive attitude.
- Well organized
- Current ServSafe Manager certification
- High School Diploma or GED
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 years’ experience in food preparation, storage, and inventory management.
- 3 years’ experience in menu preparation and meal planning for large groups of people and that may have multiple dietary restrictions
- Experience as a trainer or mentor
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Experience resolving employee issues and disputes
- Culinary degree or documented advanced culinary training
Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Early morning rotating shifts
Shift expectations:
- 32 hours per week, rotating shifts.
- Day shift, and weekends on a rotating schedule.
- Must be available on all major holidays as necessary.
- Schedule subject to change according to holidays, personnel illnesses, etc.
- Other days as necessary.
