We are currently seeking an Associate General Counsel who will be responsible for providing a broad range of legal services in support of ARIN’s mission. This role partners closely with the General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel, advising on contracts, privacy matters, compliance, fraud investigations, and governance. The successful candidate will bring sound judgment, strong analytical skills, and the ability to navigate complex legal and regulatory issues in a collaborative, fast-moving environment.
Job Description and Responsibilities
· Contracts and Transactions: Review, draft, and negotiate vendor contracts, terms of service, and related agreements to protect ARIN’s interests.
· Privacy and Compliance: Monitor and analyze privacy laws, emerging legislation, and regulatory trends that may affect ARIN’s operations; advise internal stakeholders accordingly.
· Legal Research and Writing: Conduct thorough legal research and prepare clear, concise analyses, memoranda, and reports on a wide variety of legal topics.
· Governance Support: Provide legal support to ARIN’s Advisory Council, including attending meetings and preparing documentation as needed.
· Fraud and Dispute Matters: Assist with investigations of suspected fraud, hijacking, or other misuse of ARIN’s registry services; review claims of rights to registrations.
· Cross-Functional Counsel: Advise ARIN staff on the legal sufficiency of documentation and support effective risk management practices across the organization.
· General Counsel and Deputy General Counsel Support: Track assigned matters, ensure timely responses, and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the legal department.
Additional Duties
· Travel: Represent ARIN at meetings and industry conferences as may be needed from time to time to include Advisory Council meetings held 2-3 times per year.
· Other general legal matters as assigned.
Background/Skills Required
· Minimum of 5-10 years of experience as a practicing attorney, preferably with significant in-house or government experience.
· Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
· Active license to practice law in Virginia (Virginia State Bar), or alternatively can hold an active status corporate counsel certificate with the Virginia State Bar.
· Demonstrated expertise in contract review, drafting, and negotiation.
· Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills with proven ability to provide practical, business-focused advice.
· Exceptional writing and editing ability with attention to detail.
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of interacting effectively with executives, staff, and external stakeholders.
· Ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines while maintaining high quality and professionalism.
· Commitment to collaboration, integrity, and ARIN’s mission.
Background/Skills Preferred
· Law journal, clerkship, or other substantial legal writing experience.
· Familiarity with corporate governance, regulatory filings, and compliance programs.
· Experience with online legal research tools and the PACER system.
· Knowledge of privacy law and related issues, including data protection frameworks.
· Prior experience working in the Internet, technology, or nonprofit sectors.
Physical Requirements
· Moderate physical activity with the ability to type and perform repetitive motions.
· 80% of time looking at computer screen.
