What are the responsibilities and job description for the Get Ready Campaign Internship: 2024 summer internship (June 1 - August 15) position at American Public Health Association?

Overview

Launched in 2006, APHA's Get Ready campaign helps Americans prepare themselves, their families and their communities for all disasters and hazards, including pandemic flu, infectious disease, natural disasters and other emergencies. Get Ready is an innovative campaign that uses new media and tools to creatively convey the importance of preparedness to the general public.   Major highlights of the campaign include a national Get Ready Day, held the third Tuesday of each September; Get Ready: Set Your Clocks, Check Your Stocks, which encourages people to check their emergency stockpiles when they change their clocks for daylight saving time; and the Get Ready photo contest and tips calendar. The campaign includes free resources for the public and health workers, including fact sheets, a blog, a Twitter, podcasts, Q&As and a calendar of events.   This is an US-based internship and must be able to work in the US during the internship.  APHA internships are unpaid and located in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

All APHA interns work on the Get Ready campaign, but the Get Ready intern serves as a project manager for each semester’s work, which may include one major all-hands-on-deck project, such as a calendar or video. The internship heavily features writing and creating material for Get Ready, helping to plan activities for Get Ready Day and the Clocks and Stocks program and organizing for APHA’s Annual Meeting and Expo. A Get Ready intern will have the opportunity to support APHA's and Get Ready’s social media tools, such as Twitter and YouTube. Work will also include writing blog posts, designing infographics and recording and editing podcasts for Get Ready.   Interns may conduct research and analysis to develop factsheets, shareable tools and other educational resources on a variety of emergency preparedness and emerging infectious disease issue areas. Other responsibilities may include attending relevant briefings and seminars.

Qualifications

APHA’s Get Ready campaign offers one internship per semester to a qualified student. We are looking for creative, enthusiastic and out-of-the-box thinkers. Must be comfortable leading a team. Experience with deadlines, graphic design and translation of evidence-based information into lay language is a plus, as is experience with social media and websites. Opportunities for internships are available year-round and last for a three- to four-month period. To assure that the intern maximizes her or his experience, we ask that the intern work at least 21 hours per week. All APHA internships are unpaid. Start and end times are negotiable.   Applicants who meet the requirements and are interested in being considered for an internship position should upload the following information: - cover letter, indicating your specific area(s) of interest and expertise, what you hope to gain from an APHA internship, why you would like to intern at APHA and your availability and schedule; - resume; - two writing samples, 1-2 pages each, or one 1-2 page writing sample and one graphic design sample(published, from a website or from schoolwork); and - List of two references (from two individuals who know you well enough to discuss your qualifications, e.g., an employer or professor). This is an US-based internship and candidates must be able to work in the US during the internship.  APHA internships are unpaid and located in Washington, D.C.  Hybrid or remote options are available.   Vaccination Policy: Interns must adhere to APHA COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate Policy.   Deadline date:       February 6, 2024 @5 pm EST (Eastern Standard Time)   EEO/AA/VETS/DISABILITY.  APHA is strongly and actively committed to diversity in its workplace.
