What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanical Designer position at American Oxygen?
Job Title: Mechanical Designer
Employment Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $60,000 – $80,000 / year
About the Role
We are a fast-moving, high-tech startup looking for a versatile, practical Mechanical Designer to join our team as we bring a new commercial product to market. Because we operate in a lean startup environment, this role requires someone who thrives on wearing many hats—jumping seamlessly from 3D CAD work at your desk to hands-on prototyping, testing, and troubleshooting in the shop.
Your primary focus will be translating product needs into reliable, easy-to-manufacture CAD designs while actively finding ways to cut our overall cost of manufacturing for a new product.
Key Responsibilities
- CAD Modeling & Detailing: Develop, iterate on, and maintain 3D part models, assemblies, and clear 2D manufacturing drawings using modern CAD packages.
- Cost Reduction & Ease of Manufacturing: Analyze existing and upcoming component designs to drive down part and assembly costs. Design with practical, loose tolerances where appropriate to keep fabrication simple, fast, and economical.
- Commercial Product Development: Design enclosures, structural frames, and internal mounting hardware for a new commercial system, prioritizing long-term reliability and straightforward assembly.
- Prototyping & Fabrication: Design parts optimized for sheet metal work (laser cutting, brake forming) and rapid in-house 3D printing. Utilize our CNC router and 3D printers to build, test-fit, and validate concepts quickly.
- Mechanical Systems Integration: Route and package internal pneumatics (tubing, valves, manifolds, and fittings) alongside electronics and other hardware. Design moving assemblies, hinges, doors, and mechanisms with a solid practical grasp of kinematics.
- Startup Versatility: Wear multiple hats as needed—whether that means sourcing off-the-shelf hardware, talking directly with local sheet metal vendors to get quotes, building early units, or helping the team solve unexpected shop-floor challenges.
Required Qualifications
- Strong CAD Proficiency: Fluency in 3D CAD modeling and creating clear 2D drawings is our #1 priority. You should be comfortable building and modifying assemblies quickly and cleanly.
- Practical Fabrication Knowledge: Hands-on familiarity with sheet metal work, assembly work, and 3D printing, with an understanding of how design choices directly impact unit cost and ease of assembly.
- Mechanical Systems Familiarity: Experience working with pneumatics (gas/air routing, fittings, valves) and basic kinematics for moving mechanical parts.
- Portfolio of Work: Ability to share a small portfolio showcasing previous CAD assemblies, drawings, or physical projects you have designed.
- Startup Mindset: Adaptable, self-directed, and excited to take on a wide variety of tasks in a collaborative, fast-paced high-tech startup environment.
Bonus Qualifications (Nice to Have)
- Experience designing parts for or operating a CNC router (flat-stock routing, nesting, hold-down strategies).
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Design, or equivalent hands-on industry experience.
- Experience helping transition a product from early prototypes into economical commercial production.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume along with a small portfolio of previous work (a PDF, link, or 3–5 work samples). Your portfolio does not need to be huge—we just want to see clear examples of your CAD skills, your familiarity with sheet metal or 3D-printed parts, and any projects where you designed for reliability and low manufacturing cost.
