Job Description Summary
The Project Chemist/Material Scientist is a post-graduate/post-doctoral type position in applied chemistry specific to water treatment and the use/development of nano materials for desalination and contaminant removal. The successful candidate will have a PhD in chemistry, material science, or related field, and be familiar with various nano metals or nano composites including characterization methodology and reaction routes of said nano materials in aqueous systems. This position requires superior written and verbal communication skills to effectively interface with staff personnel, clients, and vendors. An employee in this position is expected to work as a member of diverse project teams and accomplish specific tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Potential Travel: Travel to project sites located in the western US, and elsewhere, both domestic and international.
Position Location: Seattle, Washington. NewFields operates a research laboratory at this location and the successful applicant would be required to work in this facility.
Physical Demands: Position may require sitting for long periods of time, extended hours working on a computer and/or at a laboratory bench and lifting up to 30 pounds. Field assignments are located in a variety of climactic conditions and may require standing, squatting, bending, the use of machinery and a variety of tools.
Essential Functions
Develop technical scopes of work and conduct bench, field, and desktop investigation activities that focus on (1) the manufacture/synthesis of nano-metals, (2) improved reactivity of nanometal for water quality improvement in pilot and full-scale reactors, and (3) revealing mechanistic information on specific reaction pathways for the improved performance of nano-metals in aqueous environments and water treatment systems. Plan and conduct chemical and physical characterization studies on available and manufactured nano materials including surface area analysis, TEM, and SEM characterization and performance of surface modified nanometals in aquatic environments and water treatment systems. Support the development, construction, and performance of pilot plants for contaminant removal and brackish water desalination. Manage sample shipments, contract laboratory analyses, and purchase of essential equipment and supplies. Publish and/or patent the results of original research and attend/present at appropriate conferences. Organize, validate, and evaluate physical and chemical data. Participate in team-based project work resulting in client satisfaction and the timely completion of high- quality technical work products including water treatment products.
