2nd shift lab technician

Job Description

Primary hours: 2nd shift (3 PM to 11 PM), Monday through Friday Sat & Sun at overtime rate. Sat & Sun to be expected through the next 6 months. Candidates with little or no experience would be trained on 1st shift (7 AM to 3 PM) before transitioning to night shift.

SERIOUS CANDIDATES ONLY WITH THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION, NO ATTENDANCE ISSUES, AND STRONG WORK ETHIC.

• Performing hourly hardness checks using a Rockwell hardness tester
• Sectioning parts using metallurgical cutoff saw, etching parts and reading with Brinell scope to check Total Case Depth
• Prepare microspecimen mounts and perform microhardness traverse testing for all parts requiring Effective Case Depth testing.
• Control and maintenance of all maintenance and calibration records for applicable lab equipment, including gauges provided by our customers.
• Perform final inspection of outgoing parts, and hold material if necessary.
• Interact and communicate with plant personnel, with particular emphasis on guiding the Furnace Operator on the tempering temperature by interpreting the in-process testing results, the work order history, and utilizing the lab furnace.
• Review and recommend product and process improvements.
• Hardness verification of calibration, including the micro-hardness testers, if any of the testers are used for checking parts in the shift.
• Replace polisher grinding paper(s) as needed
• Verify the dew point on the running generators.
• Refill any lab consumables, such as mounting powder, methanol bottle, nitric acid bottles, soap, cotton balls, etc.
• Add water and rust inhibitor Richcut 502 to the cutting fluid circulation tanks if necessary. Clean up tanks and inside the saws at the end of your shift.
• Create lab reports as needed (training provided).
• Mix acids to fill up the large bottles if they empty below 25%, from the closet adjacent to the lab. There must be 3 people minimum in the plant to mix acid for safety reasons.
• Cover up all lab instruments when not in use: micro-hardness machines and microscope.
• Sweep the floor at the end of the shift.
• Communicating with incoming shift personnel to advise and alert them as to issues, priorities, important jobs, where you left off, etc.
• Report any malfunctioning equipment.
