About Us

The Connecticut Soldiers', Sailors' and Marines' Fund was established by the Connecticut General Assembly in 1919 to assist needy wartime veterans and their families. The Fund is administered by The American Legion, Department of Connecticut, under the Connecticut General Statutes. SSMF provides temporary financial help with essentials such as food, shelter, utilities, heating fuel, clothing, medical and dental care, and funeral expenses for eligible Connecticut veterans and their families.

Position Summary

The Fund Representative is the veteran's first point of contact with SSMF. Working from our Norwich office two days per week, the Fund Representative meets with veterans and their families, helps them complete the Application for Assistance, verifies their documentation, and forwards completed applications to the Administrator for a decision. • Prepare the Application for Assistance with the applicant and make sure it clearly and completely describes the applicant's circumstances
  • Review and verify supporting documents, including discharge papers (DD-214 or equivalent), proof of Connecticut residency, marriage and birth records, income records, and account statements
  • Witness signatures on the Release of Information consent form
  • Write comments and recommendations on each application and forward completed applications to the Administrator promptly
  • Explain eligibility requirements and the application process to applicants, while making clear that all decisions are made by the Administrator or Assistant Administrator
  • Distribute weekly Care and Relief assistance and coordinate other approved assistance with recipients
  • Check for changes in a veteran's circumstances (employment, family status, VA or Social Security benefits) at each visit and report material changes to the Administrator
  • Prepare Renewal Applications for veterans requesting extended or additional assistance
  • Refer applicants who do not qualify to other agencies and resources as appropriate
  • Keep all applicant information strictly confidential and maintain accurate files and records

  • Ability to work on-site at the Norwich office on scheduled days

Preferred:

  • Experience with veteran casework, veterans service work, or social services
  • Familiarity with VA benefits, military discharge documents, and Connecticut veterans resources
  • Basic computer skills (email, word processing, spreadsheets)
