Position Summary
The American Irish Historical Society (AIHS) seeks Archival Research Interns for a semester/quarter-length (12-week) temporary position. This internship is designed for current (or recently graduated) undergraduate and graduate students pursuing study in the field of history, literature, archives, and other related subjects. Those with a demonstrated interest in Irish-American history will be prioritized.
Working under the supervision of the Lead Archivist, the interns will gain hands-on experience in archival descriptive research, while supporting AIHS’s mission to increase access to Irish-American history through its archives.
This opportunity will result in a presentation of archival research and an opportunity for publication in a chosen topic.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct surveys of archival collections to discover research interests.
- Complete research outside of AIHS, using secondary resources such as NYPL, JSTOR, and others.
- Physically arrange (sorting and labeling containers) and describe archival collections at the folder level.
- Input descriptive data and container locations into AirTable.
- Handle archival materials with care.
- Reporting progress to supervisor on a weekly basis, completing assignments related to ongoing research.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Currently attending or having recently completed an undergraduate or graduate degree, related to the studies listed above.
- Ability to conduct advanced archival research, guiding one’s own interests with support from supervisors.
- Capacity to read in cursive, or willingness to learn. Ability to read in Irish preferred.
- Demonstrated interest in Irish-American history, especially in New York and Boston.
- Familiarity with Google Suite, Microsoft Office. Preferred experience with AirTable.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are necessary. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to pay close attention to detail and organize effectively.
- Ability to work collaboratively with members with fellow interns and Archives team.
- Willingness to learn, take initiative and work independently. Past research experience is not necessary.
- Must be able to lift and carry boxes up to approximately 40 lbs.
