Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Career Counselor to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a passion for helping individuals navigate their career paths and achieve their professional goals. This role involves providing guidance and support to students and alumni in various aspects of career development, including job search strategies, resume writing, and interview preparation. The Career Counselor will work closely with diverse populations, fostering an inclusive environment that encourages personal and professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Provide ongoing case management to caseload of participants, maintain regular contact with participants regularly using voice, text, email, and in-person communication channels to monitor progress. Once a participant enters employment, use similar channels to conduct job retention and advancement checks
- Assess each participant’s individual career needs and opportunities to guide them through the development of an Individual Employment Plan (IEP)
- Follow program protocols to maintain updated client and program data at all times; meet program performance metrics; file management and privacy protection
- Connect program participants to appropriate services and resources like job training, education, childcare, housing, mental health/disability services, etc.
- Conduct individual and group counseling sessions to assist students in identifying their career goals and developing actionable plans.
- Provide academic advising to help students align their educational pursuits with career aspirations.
- Facilitate work-readiness workshops on resume writing, interviewing techniques, and job search strategies.
- Utilize workforce one systems for tracking student progress and managing counseling sessions.
- Mentor students through the recruitment process, offering insights into industry expectations and best practices.
- Analyze labor market trends to inform students about potential career opportunities.
- Engage in public speaking events to promote career services and resources available to students.
- Attend all relevant trainings, workshops, and networking events as well as occasionally participating in after hours events
Skills
- Intercultural competency working in a diverse environment
- Strong public speaking abilities to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in workforce one database systems for managing student information.
- Experience in interviewing techniques and mentoring practices.
- Background in education administration with a focus on individual/group counseling.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, to facilitate effective interactions with students.
- Familiarity with academic advising principles and practices within a university setting.
- Strong analytical skills to assess student needs and evaluate program effectiveness.
- Experience in recruiting processes, providing insights into employer expectations.
- Teaching experience is a plus, enhancing the ability to deliver engaging workshops.

Required
- Understanding of human services programming and ability to align eligibility requirements and needs with appropriate contacts and resources
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office/Office 365

Preferred

About American Indian OIC
American Indian OIC (AIOIC) was established in 1979 to address the education and employment disparities faced by Native American families living in and around South Minneapolis. The organization was founded as a career counseling provider, but now offers multi-faceted education and workforce development services through its alternative high school, Adult Basic Education program, job training center, and career counseling services. The goal of these programs is to give people the foundational education and support needed to pursue meaningful career opportunities. Although it was founded to serve people of Native descent, most of AIOIC’s programs are open to anyone regardless of race, creed, gender, religion, age, or sexual orientation. Annually, more than 1,000 people from the Twin Cities metropolitan area and affiliated with 40 distinct tribal nations from the US and Canada, utilize AIOIC’s services.
