Job Description
Position Summary & Objective
The Strategic Sourcing Lead is responsible for developing accurate, competitive material and subcontract cost estimates to support quoting, bidding, and long‑range planning in a heavy manufacturing environment. This role bridges procurement expertise with front‑end estimating, ensuring that cost inputs reflect real‑world supply conditions, global market trends, and supplier capabilities. The Strategic Sourcing Lead partners closely with engineering, operations, sales, proposals and strategic sourcing to build reliable cost models and strengthen the company’s competitive position.
Estimating and Cost Development
- Lead the creation of material, component, and subcontract cost estimates for new bids, RFQs, and customer proposals.
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and shop capabilities to identify sourcing requirements and cost drivers.
- Develop cost models for fabricated components, weldments, machined parts, steel plate, castings, forgings, transportation, and other heavy‑manufacturing materials.
- Analyze historical pricing, market indices, and supplier quotes to validate estimate accuracy.
- Identify cost risks, long‑lead items, and supply chain constraints early in the quoting process.
- Develop and maintain a robust vendor base providing multiple options for commodities, specialty components and services
- Develop and standardize estimating tools, templates, and cost -tracking methodologies.
- Support strategic sourcing initiatives by identifying high-impact cost-reduction opportunities.
- Package and deliver the in-depth plan for the procurement team to execute once award is received.
Supplier Engagement and Quoting
- Coordinate RFQs with domestic and international suppliers to gather competitive pricing and lead‑time data.
- Evaluate supplier quotes for completeness, technical compliance, and commercial terms.
- Build and maintain a database of benchmark pricing, supplier capabilities, and commodity trends.
- Support early supplier involvement for complex or custom‑engineered components.
- Outside of quoting activities, this position will proactively diversify and strengthen the supply base by sourcing and qualifying new suppliers.
