Who You Are:
You believe the most urgent work of our time is to counter division with connection.
You are driven by the very humanist conviction that in a world beset by forces trying to pit us against each other, the most radical act is to build compassionate, reasonable, and empathetic communities dedicated to building a kinder world. You want to be a beacon of that connection and at the heart of motivating others to the cause.
You are skilled at operating on two levels: you are a natural connector for our national community and a dedicated operational hub for the department. You bring order to creative energy by excelling at translating ideas into implementable programs while also expertly managing the calendar and workflow to manage up and out. You find satisfaction in building scalable systems and creatively maximizing impact through collaboration internally and externally.
You understand that this vital work requires a passionate, public-facing strategy and a rock-solid operational core. As the operational backbone for a new department within a historic movement, you are excited to help build that core with kindness and precision, owning the logistics and creating the supportive systems that empower both our volunteer leaders and our team to do their best work.
Does that sound like you? Good. We’ve been waiting.
Who We Are:
Hi! Nice to meet you. We’re the American Humanist Association. Humanists believe in people. We believe that people have inherent worth and dignity, without needing to be saved or redeemed. We believe that people can do anything as long as we live in a society where people are free to think freely and pursue rational truth. And we believe the highest good is to help other people live lives of freedom and flourishing.
Humanists have always moved America. Kristen Bell, Gloria Steinem, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Bill Nye, Steve Wozniak, Joyce Carol Oates, A. Philip Randolph, John Dewey, Margaret Atwood, Abraham Maslow, Jamie Raskin - these are some of the American visionaries whose humanism led them to envision new frontiers for advancing human worth and dignity.
For over 80 years, the AHA has been the epicenter of the humanist movement. We promote humanism as a community and worldview that “nothing in particular,” “spiritual but not religious,” atheist, and agnostic folks can belong to, believe in, and fight for. We fight the radical religious right in the courts, Congress, and the streets, organizing our thousands of members and communities nationwide to fight for the separation of church and state, make the moral case for progressive public policy, and take direct action to improve their communities. We train hundreds of secular chaplains and celebrants who perform marriages and work in hospitals, college campuses, and prisons.
In an era of growing isolation, our 200 local communities are a powerful antidote to the loneliness epidemic. They are where humanism is put into action, offering people hope and friendship not through dogma, but through shared values. We envision them as vibrant hubs of compassionate action, organizing mutual aid projects, advocating for secular values in government, building multigenerational friendships, and serving as a welcoming beacon for all humanists in their area. This role is central to helping our groups achieve that bold vision.
We are a small but mighty team building a movement where science tells us what’s real and empathy tells us what’s right. We all lean in, get our hands in the work, and strive to build a kinder tomorrow, every single day.
And we’ve got hella work to do.
The Role:
You are the operational heart of the Organizing Department. You will provide critical administrative, logistical, and communications support to empower our nationwide network of local groups, increase awareness of humanism, grow our membership, and increase service and advocacy participation.
Put more simply: You help humanists find groups for people like them. You help those groups become stronger, more welcoming places for people to belong. And then you help them change the world.
You will:
- Provide direct support to the Organizing Director, including managing schedules, coordinating training, comanaging the AHA Discord, and serving as a key thought partner in implementing the department’s strategy.
- Serve as the primary administrative and logistical contact for the AHA’s 200 chapters, managing databases, scheduling regular trainings, check-ins, and cohorts, and preparing marketing and programming materials.
- Handle frontline communications with chapter leaders, answering routine questions and directing complex issues to the appropriate team members.
- Help administer the grant programs by processing applications, tracking reporting requirements, and maintaining records.
- Assist in developing and delivering training programs for chapter leaders by managing registration, coordinating schedules, and formatting materials.
- Coordinate with other AHA departments to mobilize members for service and advocacy campaigns by drafting emails, creating promotional materials, conducting direct outreach, and tracking participation.
- Support the full lifecycle of our volunteer programs, including the recruitment, onboarding, training, and recognition of our dedicated leaders.
Requirements:
Non-negotiable:
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills, with a proven ability to manage up while juggling multiple moving parts and deadlines.
- A proactive and resourceful problem-solver who thrives on bringing clarity to complexity, anticipates needs, and can gracefully manage shifting priorities.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a conversational tone clearly and professionally with a diverse range of people.
- Experience in an administrative, coordinating, or operations role, preferably in a non-profit or community-based organization. Experience providing support to a team leader or executive is a strong plus.
- Proficiency with standard office software and a high level of comfort learning new digital tools. (We run primarily on Google Workspace, Canva, ActionNetwork, Raisers Edge, and Slack)
- Understanding of and commitment to the AHA’s mission and values.
Nice To Have, But Not Necessary:
- Experience with/connection to the humanist/secular movement or affiliated movements like Unitarian Universalism (but willingness and enthusiasm to learn is an absolute must.)
- Experience with CRM or database software (e.g. Salesforce/ActionNetwork)
- Experience writing and managing email communications designed to mobilize supporters and drive them to take action.
- Experience managing online communities, with a knack for fostering engagement and a welcoming culture.
- Experience in volunteer management, including recruitment, training, and support.
- Prior experience working remotely
We Don’t Care About:
- Your degrees or where you went to school (just that you’re a lifelong learner)
- Your years of experience (tenure doesn’t matter, demonstrated success does)
Compensation: The salary range for Coordinator-level roles at the AHA is $55,000-$65,000, depending on experience and with new hires rarely starting at the top of the range. AHA offers employees an annual cost of living wage increase each year based on the inflation rate. In addition, promotions and/or merit-based pay increases are available for team members who consistently exceed expectations.
Benefits:
We offer generous benefits, including:
- Fully paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, and the option to enroll dependents with the AHA covering 50% of the premium
- 403b plan - and we’ll match your contributions up to 3% of your salary
- Fully employer-paid short-term and long-term disability insurance, and life insurance
- Partial cell phone reimbursement ($45/month) and, for fully remote employees, partial home internet reimbursement ($65/month)
- Flexible Spending Account and pre-tax commuter benefits available
- Professional development budget available
PTO:
We want you to work hard on the clock and have plenty of flexibility to live a full life off of it. In general, we tend to be flexible around working arrangements and hours to meet staff needs, but here are our formal policies.
- Earned PTO: 18 days PTO in your first year, increasing by one day a year until you reach 25 days.
- Holidays: 12 paid holidays, plus the days between December 24th and January 1st.
- Flex time: 3 hours of additional “flex time” off each week to schedule as you please, to account for doctor’s appointments, errands, or just starting your weekend a bit early.
- Flexible Scheduling: Employees have the freedom to set their own schedule, as long as they’re available/online 40h a week (not counting flex time) and between the hours of 11a-3p EST.
- Parental leave: 8 weeks of leave at full pay and an additional 4 weeks of leave at 75% pay for new parents.
- Comp time: Time off is earned on a 1:1 basis for evening and weekend events worked and work travel outside of regular hours. (We anticipate this position will travel 3-4 times a year if based in or near DC, and 5-6 times a year if fully remote.)
