ABOUT AMERICAN FLOOR COVERING
American Floor Covering (AFC) is a specialty subcontractor focused on commercial stone, tile and flooring fabrication and installation. With over 30 years of profitable success, we work on complex projects alongside general contractors and developers, and we hold ourselves to one standard: be the best subcontractor on every project. We are a growing company with a best-in-class culture, and we take care of our employees and clients. We are looking for a Controller who wants a career — not just a job — and who wants to do great work and be recognized for it.
THE ROLE
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will own AFC’s entire finance and accounting function — from monthly close and WIP reporting to cash management, billing, compliance, and daily financial dashboards. You will sit on the leadership team, work directly with the Owner, and be expected to turn numbers into insight that drives decisions. You will also build and lead the accounting team.
You will have ample support, coaching, and time to master the role. That said, our expectations are high: you own the result, you meet your deadlines, and you operate with integrity at all times.
WHAT YOU'LL OWN
Reporting & Close
- Monthly close by the 10th — balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, all on accrual
- WIP and closed contracts schedule with earned revenue, margin, and over/under billings
- Written monthly analysis of financials: trends, variances from budget, and corrective action recommendations
- Daily financial dashboards and management reporting
- Budgets and projections as directed by leadership
Job Cost & Billing
- Job cost integrity: costs applied to the correct job and code promptly, cost-to-complete reviewed monthly
- Billing built around each job’s requisition cycle — every job billed, nothing missed, complex requisitions handled accurately the first time
- WIP tied to billings so billed, earned, and over/under billings stay aligned
Cash, Collections & Contracts
- Weekly cash flow report and rolling 13-week forecast built on a verified cash position
- Collections, retainage tracking, and lien rights management; over-90-days kept to 5% maximum
- Contract document system: executed contracts, change orders, insurance certificates, lien waivers
- Change order tracking and pursuit — unapproved COs identified, reviewed with PMs, and collected
- Client pre-qualification process
- Annual review of insurance policies and costs
Daily & Recurring Accounting
- AP and AR posted, verified, and current; vendors paid on time and within discount terms
- Payroll processed accurately and on time
- Payroll tax reporting, W-2s, and vendor 1099s
- Sales and use tax filed and paid on time
- Union reporting and certified payroll for accuracy and timeliness; fringes and wages tied to the GL
- Cash, bank, and credit card reconciliations
- GL, chart of accounts, journal entries, and account reconciliations maintained
- Purchasing oversight: place orders, confirm lead times, verify pricing, receive material, enter invoices
- Monitor and report on property, plant, and equipment purchases and inventory levels
- Petty cash management
- All accounting-related monthly, quarterly, and annual filings tracked and submitted on time
Team & Process
- Lead an accounting team committed to excellence and consistent delivery
- Build and follow written SOPs for all accounting functions; continuously improve them
- Cross-train the team so every critical function has backup coverage
- Invest in the team’s growth and your own
MUST HAVE
- Minimum 7 years of controller experience in the commercial construction industry
- Deep, hands-on experience with percentage-of-completion accounting, job costing, and WIP
- Has run the full books for a commercial construction contractor — ideally a subcontractor
- Has built or managed an accounting department that operates on documented SOPs
- Has managed and developed a team
- Collaborative — asks questions, works closely with operations, not in a silo
- Strong with technology; quick to learn new systems
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience with Structure by CF Data Systems
- Uses AI tools to work smarter and improve accuracy
WHO YOU ARE
You are organized, dependable, and discreet. You set high standards for yourself and your team, you bring problems to the Owner early, and you never make excuses. You are calm under pressure, energized by a fast-moving business, and you operate above the line — you see it, own it, solve it, and do it. If you want a place where great work is recognized and your voice shapes how the company runs, this is it.
WHAT WE OFFER
- A seat at the leadership table — your work directly shapes how AFC runs and grows
- A company with 30 years of profitable success and a culture built on integrity

- Coaching, support, and genuine investment in your development
