Campus Security Officer

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Campus Security Officer is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for AFI Staff, Faculty, Fellows, and visitors throughout their assigned shift.

As the first line of response, the security team addresses potential safety concerns by providing visible presence, managing conflict, and delivering essential public safety services to the campus community.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

• Serve as a visible deterrent to crime, prohibited conduct, and suspicious activity across campus, including driveways and shared walkways.
• Conduct regular patrols and inspections of campus grounds, promptly reporting unusual activity or incidents and intervening, when necessary, to address or detain potential threats.
• Monitor campus and perimeter activity to identify and respond to suspicious or unauthorized individuals, vehicles, or materials.
• Manage conflicts and incidents in a calm, efficient, and safety-focused manner; respond decisively in high-pressure or emergency situations.
• Perform hourly foot patrols of assigned areas, checking for unsafe conditions, hazards, unsecured doors, blocked entrances/exits, and mechanical issues.
• Execute locking and unlocking procedures for assigned post during designated patrol periods.
• Inspect buildings, grounds, and perimeters for lighting outages or other safety concerns, ensuring timely reporting and follow-up.
• Maintain effective communication with the Switchboard and Human Resources to support smooth daily campus operations.
• Open and secure rooms and facilities as scheduled, conducting sweeps of unoccupied spaces to assess and safeguard items of value; document and log any personal items found in accordance with Lost and Found procedures.
• Enforce AFI parking policies as outlined in the Security Manual, including issuing citations for violations.
• Support traffic flow and provide parking assistance during special events and high activity periods (e.g., registration).
• Prevent the unauthorized removal of AFI equipment, materials, or property.
• Respond promptly to emergency and routine incidents; assess situations quickly and take appropriate action to de-escalate potential threats. When necessary, be prepared to confront individuals to protect life and property.
• Investigate and document all incidents, accidents, theft, and security concerns. Notify Human Resources as soon as possible following any incident, and submit finalized reports within 24 hours.
• Serve as an active member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
• Assist in the planning and execution of evacuation drills and emergency preparedness exercises.
• Support communication efforts with Emergency Response Team members during evacuations and other emergency situation.
• Maintain consistent radio communication with security personnel to ensure coordinated operations.
• Conduct regular checks to secure all campus areas during shifts and at campus closing.
• Monitor the Security cell phone and respond promptly to all calls and inquiries.
• Coordinate after-hours deliveries and pickups of production trucks, vehicles and, equipment.
• Monitor alarm systems and respond appropriately including coordinating with Tyco ADT, fire departments, and law enforcement as needed.
• Complete and submit a Daily Activity Report (DAR) at the end of each shift, documenting all tasks performed and notable campus activities (e.g., parking violations, trespassers, lost and found items.).
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIRED:

• High School Diploma required.
• Minimum of one (1) year of experience in Security Operations.
• Must possess a valid Security Guard certification issued by the State of California or an equivalent licensing agency.
• Must possess a current pepper spray permit or obtain one within 45 days of hire.
• CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain professional composure in high-pressure situations, including interactions with hostile individuals.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures, often without immediate supervision.
• Strong observational and situational awareness skills.
• Excellent customer service skills with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, with strong follow-up and reporting skills while maintaining attention to overall priorities.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information in simplistic terms.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
• High level of professionalism, discretion, and diplomacy.
• Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure.
• Demonstrated integrity with the ability to inspire confidence and trust.
• Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Mac Mail.
• Ability to stand or extended periods of time.
• Ability to run and/or climb stairs in response to emergency situations.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions including sustained exposure to inclement weather, while utilizing appropriate protective gear and maintaining personal and public safety.
