Member Experience & Engagement
Leads strategy, programs, and relationship management for resident and early career physician (ECP) members. This role designs targeted engagement initiatives, builds leadership pipelines, and strengthens connections between residents, early career physicians, and the association. The Director partners across departments to ensure trainee and early‑career needs are reflected in education, advocacy, and member services. A key focus of the role is growing and engaging residency program membership through strong relationships with program leaders and tailored outreach. Using data and member insights, the Director continuously improves programs, communications, and engagement outcomes
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Program Development & Management
Develops and implements a strategic engagement roadmap for resident and early career physician (ECP) members.
Designs, manages, and evaluates programs tailored to residents and ECPs.
Coordinates resident and ECP engagement strategies before, during, and after major association meetings to maximize participation and continuity.
Develops and supports initiatives addressing key career transition points, including resident‑to‑attending, fellowship decisions, and early‑career sustainability.
Monitors trends in medical education, workforce development, and early‑career practice to inform program design and priorities.
Builds leadership pipelines by identifying, developing, and supporting emerging resident and ECP leaders to strengthen long‑term engagement and retention.
Partners with internal teams (advocacy, education, meetings, communications, membership) to ensure resident and ECP perspectives are integrated across the organization.
Residency Program Membership Growth & Engagement
Develops and executes strategies to increase residency program membership participation and engagement, including outreach to program leadership, tailored onboarding approaches, and alignment with residency‑level needs.
Strengthens relationships with residency program directors and administrators to promote ACEP membership, resources, and involvement among residents.
Establishes regular feedback loops (surveys, focus groups, listening sessions) to elevate resident and ECP voices and inform program improvements.
Tracks residency program membership trends and engagement levels, using insights to refine recruitment and retention efforts.

Member Engagement & Communications
Serves as the primary staff relationship manager for resident and early career physician membership segments, including serving as staff lead for the Early Career Physician Section and related resident/ECP groups.
Collaborates with Member Operations and Marketing & Communications to define and communicate clear value propositions for residents and early career physicians and plan and deliver targeted outreach—including email campaigns, digital content, webinars, and social media—aligned to stages of training and early practice.
Oversees online communities, peer networks, and special interest groups that support connection, mentorship, and professional development.
Data, Metrics & Reporting
Uses membership and engagement data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities within resident and ECP populations.
Defines, monitors, and reports on key metrics related to engagement, participation, retention, leadership development, and satisfaction.
Provides regular insights and recommendations to senior leadership to support strategic decision‑making.
Partnerships & External Relations
Serves as the primary liaison for ACEP’s partnership with the Emergency Medicine Residents’ Association (EMRA).
Builds and maintains relationships with residency programs, medical schools, national training organizations, and affinity groups.
Represents ACEP at residency fairs, conferences, and external meetings relevant to residents and early career physicians.
Collaborates internally to support advocacy priorities affecting trainees and early-career physicians.
Team Oversight & Leadership
Establishes a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and data‑driven decision-making.
Sets clear priorities, performance expectations, and professional development plans for direct reports.
Develops and manages the annual budget for resident and ECP programs and initiatives.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree with a major in healthcare, public health, education, business, or similar.
7-10 years of experience in a membership organization, higher education, or residency program.
Demonstrated success developing engagement programs for students, trainees, or early-career medical professionals.
Strong understanding of the medical training continuum.
Exceptional relationship-building, communication, and facilitation skills.
Organized, attentive to detail, highly self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Experience working with and motivating members and volunteers.
Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills.
Other Desired Qualifications
Experience within a large national nonprofit or healthcare professional association.
Familiarity with emergency medicine, accreditation bodies, GME structures, and physician career pathways.
Experience managing volunteer leaders and advisory groups.
Data literacy and experience with Association Management Systems (Altai preferred).
Certified Association Executive (CAE) preferred.
