Position Summary

The Project Management Engineer is responsible for leading and executing capital projects within a chemical manufacturing environment, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost-effective delivery from concept through commissioning at the Castle Hayne, NC plant. This role combines strong engineering expertise with disciplined project management to support plant reliability, process improvement, and long-term strategic initiatives.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience managing capital projects in a chemical or heavy manufacturing setting, a strong understanding of metal-to-chemical compatibility, and a background in either Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management & Execution

  • Lead capital projects from initiation through design, procurement, construction, and startup/commissioning
  • Develop project scopes, cost estimates, schedules, and resource plans aligned with plant objectives
  • Manage project budgets, timelines, and deliverables to ensure successful execution within approved limits
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams including operations, maintenance, E&I, contractors, and external vendors
  • Ensure proper documentation, reporting, and communication of project status to stakeholders

Engineering & Technical Oversight

  • Apply chemical or mechanical engineering principles to design and implement process and equipment improvements
  • Evaluate and select appropriate materials of construction based on metal-to-chemical compatibility and corrosion considerations
  • Review and approve engineering drawings, P&IDs, equipment specifications, and design packages
  • Support troubleshooting and root cause analysis for process and equipment issues
  • Ensure designs meet operational, safety, and maintainability requirements

Capital Planning & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify, develop, and justify capital projects that improve safety, reliability, capacity, and cost efficiency
  • Support long-range capital planning and asset management strategies
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives aligned with plant performance goals
  • Execute, develop and manage asset inventory, creation and retirement

Safety, Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure all projects comply with applicable regulations, including OSHA PSM, environmental standards, and company policies
  • Participate in and lead Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), and Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)
  • Incorporate safety and risk mitigation into all phases of project execution
  • Promote a strong safety culture within project teams and contractor activities

Contractor & Vendor Management

  • Manage engineering firms, contractors, and equipment suppliers
  • Develop scopes of work, review bids, and oversee contractor performance
  • Ensure quality, safety, and adherence to project specifications

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or mechanical engineering 
  • 5–10 years of experience in a chemical manufacturing or heavy industrial environment
  • Proven experience managing capital projects from concept through completion
  • Strong understanding of metal-to-chemical compatibility, corrosion mechanisms, and material selection
  • Experience with process systems, piping, vessels, and industrial equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, engineering drawings, and technical specifications
  • Familiarity with project management tools, budgeting, and scheduling

Preferred

  • Experience working in PSM-regulated environments strongly preferred

Salary : $105,000 - $115,000
