What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director, Packaging Sustainability position at American Chemistry Coun?

Position Summary

The position is responsible for helping to advance American Chemistry Council’s efforts to shape and influence Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) legislation, regulations and implementation. The position is also responsible for analyzing and developing policy and directly engaging decisionmakers and stakeholders. The position is further responsible for building stakeholder alignment and ensuring ACC’s advocacy initiatives are strategic, collaborative, and impactful. The position reports directly to the Senior Director, Plastics Sustainability.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Represents ACC in public forums, stakeholder coalitions, testifying and public comments, and policy discussions to advance constructive dialogue and alignment on EPR and circular economy initiatives.
  • Convenes and leads workgroups within the membership through organizing meetings, preparing materials, and tracking stakeholder engagement.
  • Drafts policy content such as letters of support/opposition, testimony, fact sheets, and talking points to advance advocacy priorities – including EPR program engagement.
  • Builds and maintains databases and tools to track legislation, stakeholder participation, and outreach progress.
  • Collaborates across teams, especially state and federal affairs, to ensure policy materials and responses to requests are accurate, timely, and aligned with ACC’s goals.
  • Supports internal and external events, including scheduling, logistics, and vendor coordination.
  • Engages key external stakeholders such as the producer responsibility organization, state regulatory agencies, NGOs, peer trade associations, and others engaged in policy advocacy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required 

  • Bachelor’s degree in public policy, sustainability, science or a related field.
  • 8 years’ experience in regulatory affairs, public policy, government affairs, or legislative advocacy, with direct involvement in policy analysis, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability. 
  • Demonstrated ability managing budgets or resources, including forecasting and tracking expenditures.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience facilitating discussions among diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively across teams and working styles.
  • Strong proficiency in developing written communications for regulatory and diverse stakeholder audiences, along with the ability to effectively create and deliver impactful presentations.
  • Ability to travel.

Preferred Skills

  • Masters degree. 
  • Understanding recycling, waste management, or sustainability policy and related environmental issues.
  • Direct experience in implementation or compliance with extended producer responsibility policies
  • Knowledge of packaging and circular economy issues.
