Join AMERICAN as our Environmental Compliance Director and lead AMERICAN's environmental compliance program, ensuring we meet and exceed all environmental regulations. You'll oversee a skilled team, manage permitting and compliance, and shape our environmental strategy while working on impactful engineering projects.
This is a hands on role that combines strategic leadership, technical expertise, and field work.
What You'll Do
- Lead and mentor environmental staff (Environmental Managers, Design Engineers, Specialists, and student workers).
- Ensure all required air, water, and waste permits are secured and renewed. Monitor processes, review discharge analyses, and recommend corrective actions.
- Oversee environmental projects, waste management procedures, and cost-effective treatment processes for air, water, and waste streams.
- Work with legislators, regulatory agencies, and industry groups to influence environmental policy and stay ahead of changing laws.
- Collaborate with neighborhood associations and respond to environmental concerns related to AMERICAN's operations.
- Provide environmental audits for AMERICAN and its subsidiaries. Lead inspections and respond to compliance investigations.
- Partner with engineering leadership to address operational risks and develop solutions.
What We're Looking For
- Education: Bachelor's in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or Biology (ABET-accredited for engineering) OR equivalent degree with 8 years in environmental compliance.
- Must possess and maintain the following licenses/certifications:
- Alabama Professional Engineer License.
- DOT HazMat/49 CFR Part 172 certification (current).
- Smoke School Certification (field & lecture, current).
- Must exhibit deep knowledge of environmental laws, permitting, and compliance.
- Prior leadership and management experience.
- Strong communication, analytical, and organizational skills.
- Proficient with Word, Excel, Outlook, and technical measuring instruments.
Other Requirements
- Possess a State of Alabama Professional Engineers License.
- Valid driver's license.
- Willingness to work extra hours when required.
- Ability to work in varied weather conditions and safely navigate industrial environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's in Environmental Management.
- Six or more years as an Environmental Manager or Design Engineer in manufacturing.
- Familiarity with AMERICAN's engineering policies and procedures
