Position Description
LOCATION: American Bituminous Power Partners, Grant Town
JOB TITLE: Mechanic
SUPERVISOR: Maintenance Team Lead
General Purpose:
Under the direction of the Maintenance Team Lead, performs general maintenance, technical maintenance, welding, and machining of equipment at a CFB Generating facility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs equipment dismantling, repair, and installation in all areas of a Generating Station.
- Assists with inspections, repairs and overhauls of boilers, fuel, ash and limestone systems, air systems, water treatment systems, turbine/generator and other plant systems.
- Performs shaft alignment on rotating equipment by means of reverse indication and/or laser alignment equipment.
· Works from a blueprint, pattern or design drawing to lay‐out, set‐up, and perform machining operations on lathe, mill, and other machine shop equipment with tolerances down to .001". Machine internal and external keyways.
- Fabricates parts from iron, bronze, and various grades and types of steel, alloys and other metals as well as synthetic products such as rubber, nylon, and Teflon.
- Uses micrometers, dial indicators, and other precision devices.
- Designs and builds special tools and apparatus to facilitate work.
- Design and build changes to the facility and processes. Work platforms, landings, and piping.
- Scrapes and fits bearings of rotating equipment.
- Rigs to lift or move heavy equipment and directs crane operation.
- Erect Scaffolding, frame and tube and clamp styles. Install and use the high/low climber
- Uses oxyacetylene torch for heating, cutting, bending, and burning of various metals.
- Performs welding task using electric arc, TIG, MIG, and oxyacetylene welding apparatus.
- Perform pressure vessel repairs per the “R” stamp Weld procedure according to ASME and Boiler and Pressure Vessel codes.
- Perform metal cutting task using the plasma arc cutting torch and the auto track mounted torch.
- Applies insulating and/or refractory materials to steam, water, hot air, and gas piping and ducts.
- Uses and repairs hand and power tools as necessary.
- Tests, locates, and plugs leaks in tubes and performs other heat exchanger maintenance as necessary.
- Cuts, threads, bends, and connects piping.
- Removes, rebuilds or replaces, and reinstalls valves, fittings, gaskets, piping, etc.
- Performs maintenance on harsh chemical storage tanks, pumps, piping and associated equipment.
- Performs rough carpentry.
- Operates mobile equipment, forklifts, manlifts, crane, track hoe, skid-steer, etc.
- Performs maintenance on all mobile equipment, forklifts, manlifts, etc.
- Performs plant housekeeping duties.
- Repairs and installs cloth or metal expansion joints.
- Cleans, scrapes, chips, and grinds surfaces as preparation for painting, welding, etc.
- Pulls cables and wires.
- Performs painting of plant equipment.
- Assists and instructs other employees in work procedures and safe work practices.
- Initiates and/or completes maintenance orders.
- Assist engineering by gathering data, performing tests, installing hardware, perform new equipment installations and plant improvements. Provides recommendations to maintain and imporove equipment performance.
- Required to maintain tool inventories in good working order and adequate supplies.
- Functions as leader, or member of strategic, implementation, and improvement teams.
- Responsible for handling and storing of hazardous substances, labeling containers, observing hazardous waste storage areas for unusual occurrences, and maintaining waste oil storage area in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Maintain a professional and positive company image and positive relationship with peers and coustomers.
- Develop safety and training meetings.
- Writes plant procedures.
- Directs and monitors contractor activities.
- Maintains repair records for all work using the CMMS. Uses system to identify root cause of failures and plan modifications.
· Installs, splices, and repairs conveyor belts and conveyor belt lines.
- Temporarily operates and assists in operation of the fuel prep facility when needed.
- Assist in locking and tagging of equipment as needed by the operations department.
- Performs other duties as required.
Contacts:
Frequent contacts with operating and maintenance personnel to perform work as required to complete jobs. Daily interface with the Maintenance Team Lead to receive work assignments, review work priorities, and discuss problem areas. Occasional contact with contract maintenance help during plant outages, inspections, and planned work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge and understanding of mechanical maintenance methods and practices at Generating Station operated by AmBit. Thorough knowledge of the AmBit Accident Prevention Manual, station procedures, and clearance procedures.
Knowledgeable in maintenance, welding, and machining practices. Ability to read, understand, and follow blueprints, design drawings, patterns, and job plans to complete work as needed. Ability to communicate orally and in writing to describe job problems, repairs, and procedures used. Ability to work without constant direct supervision in performance of work.
Physical Strength Demand:
Heavy.
Environmental Demand:
10% inside/90% field. May be required to work rotational, shift, weekends, holidays, and emergency call‐outs as necessary to operate and maintain the plant.
Education:
High school education with technical training, apprenticeship training, and journeyman level experience. Supplemental training in print reading, technical writing, mechanical theory, oral communication, and specific equipment training desirable.
Experience:
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program and three years' experience at journeyman level, or five years' at journeyman level if on‐the‐job training was used instead of apprenticeship program.
