Quality Control Laboratory Coordinator

American Anthracite
Hazleton, PA Full Time
POSTED ON 6/1/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 7/30/2026

Position Summary

American Anthracite is seeking a meticulous and safety-minded Quality Control Laboratory Coordinator to lead our on-site testing facility.

In this role, you will be the primary custodian of our quality assurance and environmental compliance testing protocols. You will be responsible for collecting, preparing, and analyzing mineral and water samples to ensure our anthracite products meet rigorous market specifications and our operations maintain full compliance with state and federal environmental permits (including NPDES and MSHA standards). If you thrive in a hybrid environment that blends active, boots-on-the-ground field sampling with precise, high-level laboratory analysis, this position offers a vital seat within our operational team.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Specimen Collection & Field Sampling: Regularly navigate active mine sites, scale locations, railroad sidings, and preparation plants to systematically collect coal, fine coal, and water discharge samples.
  • Laboratory Testing & Analysis: Perform precise analytical testing on collected samples, including Total Suspended Solids (TSS) vacuum filtration, moisture content verification, ash analysis, and gravity parameter tracking.
  • Precision Documentation: Operationally utilize high-precision analytical balances, graduated cylinders, drying ovens, and laboratory filtration systems to accurately document sample metrics down to the milligram.
  • Compliance Reporting: Maintain meticulous, legally defensible laboratory records, logs, and chains of custody to support environmental permit requirements and quality assurance standards.
  • Operational Alignment: Collaborate closely with the Plant Control Room Operator, Plant Operators, and the broader maintenance/engineering teams to immediately communicate variations in system gravities or product yields.
  • Inventory & Maintenance: Manage the calibration, cleanliness, and maintenance of all lab apparatus, chemical reagents, and precision testing gear to ensure a completely sterile and accurate laboratory environment.
  • Cross-Functional Support: Provide technical assistance and sample tracking support during random screening processes, site audits, or regulatory inspections on an "as-needed" basis.

Position Qualifications

  • Technical Experience: 2–4 years of experience working in an industrial laboratory environment. Experience within a mining, aggregate, wastewater treatment, or heavy manufacturing laboratory is highly preferred.
  • Core Competencies: Proven proficiency with precision laboratory equipment (analytical balances, vacuum filters, titration setups). Strong mathematical aptitude for calculating data sets (e.g., mg/L, yield percentages, specific gravity).
  • Technical Communication: Excellent report-writing skills and an ability to convey immediate, actionable data to site supervisors and plant management.
  • Safety & Regulatory Mindset: High vigilance regarding laboratory safety protocols, chemical handling, and active industrial site safety compliance.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Physical Capabilities: Must be able to lift and carry sample buckets or supply deliveries weighing up to 50 pounds regularly. The position requires a high degree of physical mobility, including walking across uneven terrain at the mine site, climbing plant walkways, stooping, and standing at lab benches for extended periods.
  • Environment: Split between a controlled, precise laboratory environment and active, high-volume industrial processing areas (railroad sidings, coal prep plants, and outdoor collection points). Exposure to variable weather conditions, moving mechanical parts, and airborne particulates during field collection is routine. Full PPE compliance is mandatory during all field tasks.
