Job Description Job Description

Virginia Tech Foundation, Inc. (VTF) is a nonstock corporation established in 1948 for the sole purpose of managing the endowment and real estate portfolio of Virginia Tech, now valued at $3.4 billion. VTF exists and operates as a separate, independent entity with its own officers and governing board - managing, investing, and distributing private resources to advance Virginia Tech's mission and its strategic priorities.

Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, Inc. (VTCRC), in all its locations, is where education meets business. VTCRC is a place and a paradigm at work within an ever-changing landscape, wherever Virginia Tech is present. VTCRC is the wholly owned for-profit subsidiary of VTF.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Managing Director of Finance and Assistant Treasurer, the Finance Analyst supports the Virginia Tech Foundation's Finance function by providing financial analysis, forecasting, monitoring, and reporting related to the operating budget, operating funds, and other Foundation fund activity as assigned. This role initially emphasizes departmental operating budgets and operating fund activity, while also supporting financial reporting and analysis for restricted funds, project-specific activity, subsidiary activity, and other financial matters as needed.

The Finance Analyst serves as an execution and analytical support role within the Finance function. The position works closely with Finance leadership, Accounting, Treasury Services, and other internal stakeholders to maintain financial data, prepare recurring reports, research variances, and support budget, forecast, and fund activity analysis. In addition, the position provides cross-functional support to Treasury Services through monitoring and reporting related to notes receivable, cash management processes, financial platforms, and data integrity.

Roles & Responsibilities

Budgeting, Forecasting, and Financial Planning and Analysis Support

  • Support the annual budget and forecast processes by preparing templates, compiling data, updating schedules, and maintaining supporting documentation.
  • Assist with monitoring the Foundation's operating budget, including department-level budget activity, actual results, and forecast updates.
  • Prepare budget-to-actual reports and assist with variance analysis for Finance leadership review.
  • Research budget and forecast variances by reviewing transaction activity, fund balances, historical trends, and supporting documentation.
  • Support mid-year budget revisions, reallocations, supplemental requests, and other budget-related processes by compiling data and preparing analysis as assigned.
  • Maintain budget and forecast files, planning schedules, and recurring support materials.
  • Assist with documenting budget assumptions, reporting methodologies, and recurring procedures.

Financial Monitoring, Reporting, and Analysis

  • Monitor Foundation fund activity, including revenues, expenses, transfers, fund balances, and other financial activity.
  • Prepare recurring financial reports, dashboards, and summaries related to operating funds, departmental budgets, restricted and unrestricted fund activity, and financial performance.
  • Review financial results against budget, forecast, and prior-period trends to identify unusual activity, emerging trends, or reporting issues.
  • Assist with root-cause analysis of financial variances and prepare clear explanations for management review.
  • Work with Accounting and other internal teams to research fund activity, resolve coding questions, and ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Assist in preparing financial exhibits, schedules, and supporting materials for internal meetings, leadership review, and committee materials.
  • Support ad hoc financial analysis, including trend analysis, fund activity reviews, and management reporting requests.

Treasury Services Support

  • Monitoring and reporting on the Foundation's notes receivable, including loans made to external parties.
  • Assisting with periodic analysis of balances, activity, and compliance with loan terms.
  • Serving as a backup for cash management activities and transaction approvals, as assigned.

Process Improvement and Documentation

  • Support process improvements that enhance reporting accuracy, transparency, efficiency, and data controls.
  • Help document procedures for recurring Finance and Treasury reporting processes.
  • Assist with testing, validation, and implementation of new or revised financial reports, templates, and workflows.
  • Support special projects involving Finance, Treasury Services, Accounting, and other internal stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field required.
  • One to three years of experience in financial analysis, budgeting, accounting support, or a related role preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to work with detailed financial data.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
