What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Manager - Restaurant position at Amendment Restaurant?
AMENDMENT is looking for a General Manager to lead the restaurant as we establish a new standard for hospitality in Southwest Michigan.
This is not simply a floor-management position.
The General Manager will be the operational leader of Amendment, entrusted with the performance of the restaurant, the development of its people, the quality of the guest experience, and the culture we build around all of it.
Amendment has been created with tremendous intention. From our live-fire kitchen and ambitious food and beverage programs to the design of the room and the smallest details of service, everything is meant to contribute to a memorable experience. Our General Manager will be responsible for bringing those pieces together every day through exceptional leadership and execution.
We are looking for someone who wants real responsibility, meaningful authority, and the opportunity to help shape a restaurant from the beginning.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The General Manager will work closely with ownership and our Executive Chef to lead Amendment.
The Executive Chef will lead the culinary program and kitchen. The General Manager will lead the overall operation and guest experience. Together, they will create a restaurant where the kitchen and dining room operate as one team with one standard.
We are not looking for someone who waits to be told what to do. We are looking for a leader who recognizes opportunities, solves problems, develops people, protects standards, and takes ownership of the business.
Within the strategy and financial framework established with ownership, the GM will have the authority to make decisions regarding staffing, scheduling, training, service, employee development, operating procedures, guest recovery, and the daily priorities of the restaurant.
The right person will understand the difference between asking permission and keeping ownership informed.
WHAT YOU’LL LEAD
The Guest Experience
The General Manager is ultimately responsible for how Amendment feels to the guest.
That means establishing and protecting standards for hospitality, reservations, pacing, service, table maintenance, dining-room presentation, cleanliness, atmosphere, guest recognition, and service recovery.
The GM should be visible during service, understand what is happening throughout the room, and know when to step in. Our goal is not simply satisfied guests. We want to build relationships with people who return, celebrate with us, bring friends, and become part of Amendment.
The Team
The GM will recruit, hire, train, coach, and develop Amendment's front-of-house team and management staff. More importantly, the GM will build other leaders.
We want managers who understand their authority, employees who understand expectations, and a team that becomes stronger and more capable over time.
Amendment should be demanding without being demeaning, professional without becoming corporate, and disciplined without losing warmth. High standards and genuine care should exist together.
The Business
The General Manager must understand the business behind the dining room.
Responsibilities will include labor management, scheduling, sales performance, operating expenses, purchasing and inventory controls, cash controls, forecasting, budgeting, and analyzing restaurant performance.
We are not looking for someone who simply reports numbers. We want someone who understands what those numbers mean and knows how to respond to them.
The Operation
Because Amendment is being built from the beginning, our General Manager will have the opportunity to help establish systems and traditions that may remain with the restaurant for years.
That includes refining service standards, training programs, opening and closing procedures, management routines, scheduling practices, reservation systems, guest recovery standards, onboarding, performance management, maintenance expectations, safety procedures, and communication between departments.
Systems should not create bureaucracy. They should make excellent work easier and expectations clearer.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
A successful General Manager will build a restaurant where:
· The team is strong, stable, professional, and proud of where they work.
· Managers grow into confident leaders.
· Hospitality feels polished, thoughtful, and genuine.
· Guests return because they feel known and cared for.
· Labor and financial performance are understood and managed responsibly.
· FOH, BOH, and ownership communicate effectively.
· Problems are addressed instead of avoided.
· Standards remain high, even on difficult nights.
· The restaurant becomes more organized, capable, and sustainable as it grows.
Most importantly, excellence should not depend on luck or on one exceptional employee working that evening. It should become the normal way Amendment operates.
WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
We are looking for an experienced hospitality leader with the judgment and confidence to run a sophisticated restaurant operation.
The strongest candidates will bring:
· Significant restaurant leadership experience
· Experience leading managers and developing teams
· Strong understanding of restaurant financials and labor management
· Exceptional communication and organizational skills
· A genuine instinct for hospitality
· High standards and strong attention to detail
· The ability to make decisions and take ownership
· Calm, professional leadership under pressure
· The ability to hold people accountable while earning their respect
Experience in fine dining, chef-driven restaurants, steakhouses, luxury hospitality, craft beverage programs, or similarly high-standard operations is strongly preferred.
But experience alone is not enough. We are looking for someone who notices things. Someone who takes responsibility. Someone who can walk into a busy dining room and understand what needs attention. Someone who can have a difficult conversation when necessary and invest deeply in people when they show potential.
Someone who wants to build something.
WHY AMENDMENT
Amendment is being built to become both a landmark for Sturgis and a destination for the surrounding region, pairing ambitious food and drink with genuine hospitality and a strong sense of place.
There are restaurant management positions where the culture, systems, and expectations were established years before you arrived. This is different.
The General Manager who joins Amendment now will have the opportunity to help define how we lead, how we serve, how we train, how we communicate, and ultimately what guests come to expect when they walk through our doors.
We are building something unique.
We are looking for a General Manager who wants the responsibility and authority to help lead it.
