Role Description
The Director of Risk & Safety Operations is a full-time on-site role located in Terre Haute, IN. This role involves overseeing enterprise risk management processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, and conducting safety audits. The director will identify and mitigate operational risks, perform frequent evaluations of safety protocols and practices, and develop strategies to enhance safety and compliance. Leading and training the team to adhere to best practices while collaborating with other departments to ensure alignment with organizational goals is a key focus of this position.
Core Responsibilities
1. Field Safety Leadership
- Conduct routine ride-alongs across all service areas
- Evaluate driver behavior, patient handling, and on-scene operations
- Provide real-time coaching and corrective action
- Identify gaps between policy and actual field execution
2. Fleet & Driver Safety Management
- Develop, implement, and oversee a comprehensive driver safety program
- Monitor and track:
- Preventable accidents
- Driver behavior trends (speeding, braking, distractions)
- Establish driver accountability systems and performance standards
3. Incident Investigation & Root Cause Analysis
- Lead investigations for:
- Vehicle accidents
- Employee injuries
- Patient-related safety events (non-clinical)
- Perform detailed root cause analysis (not surface-level reporting)
- Identify contributing factors and implement corrective measures
4. Training & Behavior Change
- Develop and deliver:
- Driver safety training programs
- Post-incident retraining
- Ongoing safety refreshers
- Ensure training results in measurable behavior improvement
- Reinforce a culture of accountability and safety
5. Data Analysis & Reporting
- Track and analyze key safety metrics across all locations
- Identify trends in:
- Incidents
- High-risk employees
- High-risk locations
- Partner with leadership to develop dashboards and reporting tools
- Provide actionable insights
6. Safety Audits & Field Activity
- Conduct regular:
- Safety audits
- Driver evaluations
- Operational reviews
- Maintain strong field presence and visibility
- Ensure consistency across all service areas
7. Insurance & Claims Support
- Partner with Chief Compliance Officer on:
- Workers’ compensation claims
- Auto liability incidents
- Provide operational insight to reduce claim frequency and severity
- Assist in identifying cost-reduction opportunities
8. Program Development & Standardization
- Assist in developing standardized safety procedures across all locations
- Support alignment with company policies and regulatory expectations
- Drive consistency in safety practices across all states
Qualifications
- Experience in Risk Management, with the ability to identify, assess, and mitigate organizational risks effectively.
- Strong Analytical Skills to analyze safety data, detect trends, and implement solutions to improve operations.
- Knowledge of Regulatory Compliance requirements, ensuring adherence to local, state, and federal guidelines governing ambulance operations.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proven experience in EMS operations, fire service, fleet safety, or similar high-liability field
- Demonstrated success in reducing accidents, incidents, or claims
- Strong field leadership presence with the ability to influence behavior
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analysis
- Willingness to travel between multiple locations and conduct field work
- Proficiency in using relevant safety management software and tools.
- Familiarity with healthcare and emergency medical services is a plus.
- Bachelor’s degree in risk management, business administration, healthcare administration, or a related field is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior leadership experience in:
- Multi-site or multi-state operations
· EVOC Certification
- Background in:
- EMS leadership, fire service officer roles, or large fleet operations
- Experience with:
- Telematics systems (e.g., Samsara, Traumasoft)
- Safety dashboards or reporting tools
- Familiarity with:
- Workers’ compensation and auto liability processes
- OSHA rules and regulations as it relates to EMS
- Experience developing and implementing safety training programs
